Unless the weather was a factor I would always defer.

Generally gives your offense the best chance to succeed. By this time, you know how the defense is trying to play you. You have a better idea of what is working for you. You had the halftime break to regroup and plan the opening drive of the second half. Attack any vulnerabilities that you found. Play off any tendencies you noticed in the defense and any you setup with your offense in the first half.

I wouldn't even use that option to protect my defense/offense on the opening drive of the game if one unit was weak. The weak point is getting exposed one way or the other

I couldn’t care less if we get the ball first or not. Teams alternate possessions and the end of the halves typically boils down to clock management to either prevent or gain a possession.

I want the ball to start the third. If you're trailing you can cut into the deficit, if you're ahead you can add to it and shorten the game, and you've seen what they want to do so halftime adjustments have been made. You're also not dealing with a wound up crowd since half of them are still waiting in line in the bathroom.

I like getting the second half kickoff too but I don't think that matters as much as the beginning of the game.

Landry like to go on defense first. He thought defenses are usually more ready to play at the start than offenses.

But maybe McCarthy wants the ball first hoping to jump start the offense? I saw a stat somewhere that the Cowboys are undefeated when they score first. I think that is just coincidence but maybe MM is superstitious.
