This team needs to start deferring

Meh. I have no feelings on the coin toss unless it's overtime and you prefer to give your defense a rest. The objective isn't who scores first, it's who scores the most. Deferring doesn't mean squat if the offense goes 3 and out to start the second half anyway.

The more opportunities your offense has to possess the ball the better your chances of scoring points. I'd take the ball.

Na I'd always take the ball first in the 2nd half if I had the choice. It can be such a momentum changer, and that "joker" is better used later in the game.

I agree with this. It'd be better for our defence to take the field first because it means their O is having to get the ball first without knowing our gameplan yet and having to face Micah Parsons and co first. Then, in the second half, we can come out with a plan to either take or keep momentum.
 
This is what I know factually:

1) We won 21-6 = 15 point difference.
2) We were on the road.
3) Our opposition only scored 6 points.
4) We won time of possession. 33:23 to 26:37 and 70 total plays to their 61.
5) Won the turnover battle 4 - 1.
6) Our QB got sacked 3 times to theirs, 1.
7) Our penalties 6 (45), theirs 6 (35).
8) The HC preferred to play with his back against the wind in the 2nd half and did, while being up 2 scores.
9) We got a win without incurring injury against a team that clearly wanted to get into our offences face after the play. Many times a lot of commotion after the play. Against Washington a bit of the same with Dak. Expect more this next game and the Eagles game. Divisional hatred towards the team that is clearly dominating the division.

Opinion: If these next 3 games have this result going into the playoffs, be very happy. Regardless of accepting the ball first or kicking a field goal with 9 seconds before the half within the 20 yard line to be up 2 scores. Take it and be elated with the result.

That's what YOU would rather do. Like I said in a previous post, there's no wrong answer. There are perks to deferring and not doing it. I personally liking the idea and putting a team out of their misery. The important thing is making sure you have a lead going into half. There's a very high probability rate of winning the game when you do that.

Uhm yeah that's why I wrote "I would" lol. I guess one could write books about that decision but my argument is, in the beginning of a game anything goes, you don't need that advantage right away. Or the advantage is not as big, especially with a D unit as good as ours. Now when you have played a half and already have a good plan of the game, getting the ball first in the second half is better to either put the game away or catch up if you're trailing.

But you may not be in position to put the game away, if you didn't get the first kickoff.

Correct but I guess it's about chances/odds. I'd rather have control later in a game than right away. But again, that's just me. In soccer getting the ball after half time is even less important, but still most teams chose to get it after the break.
 
It's a unique chance to double down on consecutive possessions.

Your defense resting for 45 real time minutes, and theirs being on the the for the same duration, minus the 12 minute halftime.

Having the ball for the first possession of the game isn't always ideal, especially on the road when the opposing defense and crowd are into it full force.

I don’t know how many times we’ve won the toss and took the ball off the top of my head but I think some fans think it’s a huge number and I don’t feel like it is
I don’t think it makes any difference in win or loss unless you score on that drive

Do you know how many times we’ve won the toss and took the ball vs deferring?
 
This is one of those things that people spend an amazing amount time debating, given that it has no effect whatsoever on the chances of winning the game.

I don’t think it makes any difference in win or loss unless you score on that drive

It really doesn't. It means a lot in Madden......but I'm willing to bet that "Analytics" and stats say winning and not deferring probably results in more wins. I know these coaches want to go into half with the lead and not trailing.

And who's to say that not deferring is benefiting our defense?

Whatever ever McCarthy is doing it seems to be working and I wouldn't change anything. He knows this team better than anyone.

If you score before the half then get the ball back and score it builds momentum
But scoring on any drive build momentum
I personally would defer because I’d rather start the second half after seeing what teams are doing and adjusting to it at half time. But just not sure it makes any difference in winning or losing
The one sure way to win is score more than your opponents and when you do that isn’t always important

The way I see it, in the second half, the other team is going to do whatever they can to keep the ball away from you at the end of the game, and they'll be willing to take bigger risks to make sure. So your chance of getting one more possession in the first half is probably better. Either way, I don't think deferring or not is a legitimate strategy, other than taking advantage of the conditions.
