Great job for once. Dak needs some real pressure. Lance was a high pick, comes from a winning program and didn’t play much due to injury. This gives me hope I haven’t had since 2006

I get the premise of what you are saying but lance needs 2 years to develop and dak is going to need a new contract or small extension next year just to keep the cap hot manageable- unless Dallas does not plan on extending dak next year and taking that full massive hit then I think this is more about an insurance option as well as the potential to flip trey for higher picks after he develops

Not so much pressure

I think you may need to put that hope to rest, he poses NO threat to Dakota Prescott, PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He does not pose a threat unless Dak does not agree to a team friendly extension. Lance was a Jones family business decision in case Todd France play’s hardball. Dak actually now has threat on the sideline if he screws up. Lance is bigger, faster and stronger then Dak talent wise. There is a reason he was 3rd pick in the 2021 draft. Lance is like Jordan Love was for Rodgers and the Packers.

He’s going to be our starter.

A 2021 draft profile (solid read):

"Lance has the talent to be a good NFL starter, but given his lack of playing time and development, his pro team will need to be patient in order to not waste the raw talent that Lance possesses...
From a skill set perspective, Lance fits in with other recent first-round prospects. His size, arm strength, running ability, and big-play potential are in line with other recent first-round picks such as Pat Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, Justin Herbert, & Josh Allen"

Give the ultimate importance of the position, the possible return on this investment relative to the cost (a 4th round selection) could be significant.

Yes.

And look who developed him.

Trey Lance has some decent dual-threat physical abilities (similar to Dak), but he has no where even close the college experience or accrued statistical results that Dak had. Not even close...

Trey Lance needs lots of time learning and will likely need 2 full years to see if he catches on as a formidable #2 or not.

I wouldn’t let Dak’s huge cap number next year force me to do anything I’m not comfortable doing.

There are plenty of other contracts to rework and restructure if they need to.

I also read that his 2024 base salary has no guarantees as well.

Point being that I’m not rushing to restructure or extend him unless he has a great 2023. And I’m not going to have a big 2024 cap hit force me into anything.

Right now. He poses no threat right now. Dak's going to start this season, and Lance will play in the event of injury. However, erase that period. Things can change in the NFL. In Washington, Kirk Cousins was originally no threat to RG3, but that changed. When we drafted Dak in the 4th round, he was no threat to Romo, but that changed.
