This would disappoint me

I would be extremely disappointed if on draft day the Cowboys pick Bruce Campbell or Taylor Mays. This IMO is called the "Heyward-Bey" syndrome: A guy who performs exceptionally well in the combine or pro day that it impresses teams in spite of their on-the-field performance. Bruce Campbell and Taylor Mays are both "Heyward-Bey"s in my mind and I would not waste a first rounder on them. If I am the Boys I pick based on performance on the film and not on measurables, much like the Colts and the Patriots have over the years.

Again, I would be extremely upset if we pick any "Heyward-Bey"s in this upcoming draft.

Note: Austin IMO is not a "Heyward-Bey", to be one you must be picked in the first or second round, ie. you've been way overvalued.

Taylor Mays doesnt fit the description of a "Heyward-Bey", he was considered a 1st round talent LOOOONG before his combine performance...and what were you thinking when you threw in that Austin tidbit? do you really think people are going to question whether Austin fits your "Heyward-Bey" description? I mean, that doesn't even make sense

I don't think we'll pick Mays in Round 1.

I don't think we'll pick Campbell either. (Hopefully Crazy Al does)

You know there is always that one screwball that takes everything and twists it. I was pretty sure someone would say: "Well Austin was all potential and measurables, and look how he turned out!" I threw that out there because long shots making it off of measurables is one thing, but a top round pick on measurables alone are very rare to succeed. Risk v. Reward. 1st Round Pick on Pure Measurables has more risk (money) than reward. UDFA on Pure Measurables has least risk, just as much potential reward.

And in my mind Mays measurables doesn't add up to his performance @ USC. Not enough plays made and I think in the NFL he'll use his speed to make up for his mental mistakes much like Roy Williams did, but much like RW31 he may not be able to adjust his mental game (or he might be able to and prove me wrong).

My opinion of a workout warrior is a player who shoots up draft boards based on his combine performance. Like a Bruce Campbell, Heyward Bey is another good example. I dont think Taylor Mays falls in that category though..

4-year starter, 276 tackles, 3-time AP All-American.

You're right, he did "nothing" in college. He's just a workout warrior.

May already had some hype going into the combine, I'll give you that, but he was slipping all the way to the late 1st round maybe even early 2nd round before it. IMO he falls into the category because his performance doesn't match up to his measurables. If anything I'll say he's a mini-"Heyward-Bey" not a full blown one.

I honestly don't care too much about tackles especially when picking a safety to be a difference maker. I'm looking at turnovers. 4-year starter: 1 FF, 5 INTs.... Barely 1 INT a year.

Nate Allen. 3 Year Starter: 10 INTs, 2 FF, 216 tackles.

So stat comparison.

Mays: 0.25 FF/season, 1.25 Int/season, 69 TT/season
Allen: 0.66 FF/season, 3.33 Int/season, 72 TT/season.

Nate Allen much better choice than Mays, the workout warrior.

I've only seen videos on the guy but they aren't impressive in general. He also looked very awkward and stiff at the combine even though he wowed everyone in the 40.

With the evolution of the safety position to being more a cover position Mays looks like a risk to me. I wouldn't spend a one on him. I still think he should be a LB where he should excel. That's risky because its a position he's never played. I think he will fail as a NFL safety although it will take some time for that to occur.

In the end if Mays and Allen are both sitting there at 27 I take Allen over Mays, because Allen's play on the field is heads and shoulders above Mays.

Mays scares me and The sportingnews has us taking him everytime, I figure the Roy Williams effect will keep us from taking Mays, but then Eatman has us taking him. I'd prefer to go other directions, but the one thing that wouldn't make me hate the pick is his passion for the game.

You know I remember before Dallas drafted Roy, there was whispers of him playing 5 yrs and retiring. I don't know that Roy loves football, Mays susposedly loves it and with his measurables and a passion for the game. I can't see him being totally useless like Roy became.

I'd still rather go a different direction.

Campbell at #27 is not that bad. He's not worthy of Al Davis #8 territory, but he's a solid pick that low.

Mays either has to be in the box or play deep center.

I'm totally open to taking Mays at 27. He's a freak and hopefully between Campo and Wade they could have him play the Woodson role. I think he could be great in Dallas.

Our team is at a point where we need a playmaker that can contribute now not someone that will develop into something. Allen fits the mold of a playmaker that can roam the field, Mays will take a few years to develop.

70 tackles a yr in 12-14 games is not exactly anything to be pounding one's chest over.

He just doesnt make any big plays. We've had a FS for 2yrs who doesnt make any plays and thats why he got released. Why replace him with someone who has a similar track record.

As for the all america thing, remind us again how those are selected.

A freak who isnt much of a football player.

Mays is not even remotely close to Darren Woodson in terms of movement ability. People need to put down the crack pipe.

You guys better start getting used to the idea that Mays may be a Cowboy. We brought him in. So there is definitely interest in him.
