Thoughts on Carpenter

Guys:

Trying to figure out what we have in Carpender. My thoughts:

Positives: Great size (looks like Randy White), good speed (Note him trying to catch Kickoff returner), hard worker. Potentially good pass rusher.

Negatives: Does not appear to be an instinctive player, thinks too much instead of just turning it loose. May not be real quick or just slowed by lack of instincts.

Bottom line: I think this guy will be a slow developer due to change in positions and lack of great instincts. I don't expect a whole lot from him this year. I think he could contribute as an inside (or outside) pass rusher on nickle defenses this year. Note: He does have about the same size/speed ratio of the ILB from Chicage (Urlecker ?Sp).

Your thoughts?

It concerned me that the only time I noticed him was as he was chasing Rock on the return. Good to see him chase, but that could be because he wasn't in the right place. Hurd, another rookie, was also chasing...

When he's losing ground to Rock Cartwright on a dead sprint, its not hard to figure out whey they moved him inside.

He's learning a new position, and didn't even have a full TC to learn it. He spent all off season and 1st half of camp learning OLB. Big change for a rookie, no matter your college experience. I disagree with your part on not being instinctive. I believe he is.

So he's moved to ILB half way through camp. And now trying to learn on the job. So I think anyone would look a little out of place. Give it time. He will be fine.

Ok I heard some stupid things already

1. The return did not happen on Carps side of coverage

2. Cartwright is a RB against a LB in a long sprint guess who wins that race 99 out of a 100 times !

Depends on who the LB is.

I don't know Cartwright's 40 speed but he did letter in track and field so I am not sure he is slow by any means!

Cartwright ran a 4.42 at the Combine. All of our linebackers would lose ground to Cartwright.

Uh can you say typical rookie? Especially at a different position in a different scheme.

He's thinking to much right now of course but I expect that. Let the guy learn his position before we all jump to conclusions.

Do you have a link to any place that say Carp ran that fast? I have never seen anything lower then 4.5.

I am worried about Carp, however, he is playing a new position and I am hoping that is the problem.

I think Carpenter (Thanks for the spelling correction) ran a 4.67 forty when he was 90% recovered from his broken ankle. So, fully healthy he is probably about a 4.6 guy. Don't know what his shuttle times and 10-20 yard times are-I consider those times more important for a linebacker because they indicate quickness and change of direction.

Reread it. He said Cartwright ran the 4.42

Cartwright is not Carpenter.

Cartwright is the Skins RB. Carpenter is our LB.

Cartwright ran a 4.42, not Carpenter. Follow along now.

Cartwright also outran Sam Hurd on that return. Hurd may not be the fastest receiver in the world, but he's definitely faster than most linebackers. Carpenter losing a race to Cartwright is not at all surprising.

exactly. 40 times for LB's are superfluous. Their 10 yd. plits are far more important. Carpenter has a quick first few steps, after that he's going to tail off. Anyone expecting him to catch a RB that weighs 30 lbs less than him is being unreasonable. All of this is moot, however, as he was not at fault for the return anyway.

He was out of position on several plays. One play was a third down....I believe in the 3rd Quarter when Wash was pinned back. The rest of his teammates were pointing to where he should line up. Neither play cost us.

Overall.....Green

It took Brady James 3 years to "get it." We need to have a little patience with this kid. It's not like we need him that bad anyway right now.
