He's learning a new position, and didn't even have a full TC to learn it. He spent all off season and 1st half of camp learning OLB. Big change for a rookie, no matter your college experience. I disagree with your part on not being instinctive. I believe he is.

So he's moved to ILB half way through camp. And now trying to learn on the job. So I think anyone would look a little out of place. Give it time. He will be fine.

The knock on him coming out of college was a lack of insticts as well.

Carpenter made a mental error on his first play of the game. He was supposed to keep an eye out for Betts coming out of the backfield, but instead he followed the RWR who ran inwards. Betts was pretty wide open, but thankfully Brunnell's pass was a little bit off and Betts dropped it.

Other than that, he looked like he just came in for nickel packages and didn't do much either way. Definitely appears that Hoyte is head and shoulders above him on special teams play.

I don't like the fact that we used a 1st round pick on an ILB. Those are found all over the draft. The only LB's who are legitimate 1st round picks are those who can apply constant QB pressure.

BTW, anyone watch the 49er game? The WCO is dead in SF. Amazing. Norv Turner has turned them from a horizontal to a vertical team. AB cried, but he has talent.

I actually feel for the 49ers.

on the same KR, we saw Burnett who plays outside also being outrun. Burnett also gave up on the play way before Carpenter. Anyways, Carp looks exactly like Chad Hennings did in 1992. A rookie on a defense that is loaded with playmakers. Just like Chad in '92, Carp will hardly see the field this year. Hennings did turn out OK eventually.

I have not rewatched game yet but I think Carp was a big reason why TD was scored by Commanders...

Rock took up the middle and I think it was Carp that did not hold his ground in the middle and went to his left , not only putting himself away from the tackle but also blocking out another would be tackler....

Now I am not %100 it was Carp but without rewatching game , I am %90 sure it was him..

ummmmm.....no. try again.

he was on the right hand side. the skins doubled williams, and someone on the left side ran out of their lane, letting cartright get through. Thompson and Reeves are suspects on this one.

It was actually Singleton who went to the left of the wedge, not sure why he did that

The biggest worry I see with Carpenter isn't his speed, but that he doesn't seem very aggressive. I know he's learning a new position, but still, he should play more physical IMO. He almost looks like a finesse player out there, and that won't work at ILB in the 34.

That said, he can still improve on that... And I do think he's in the right position now, especially because I don't think Ayodele looks like a long-term answer.

My thoughts--played for a greta program that made a maybe second round at best pick look like a first rounder, be honest this guy is as big a bust as say Jacob Rogers, I mean name one play in preseason or this game where he did anything. Not sure if he's good enough to carry Wares jock. He upholds the great Cowboy tradition of defensive busts like Kavita Pittman, honestly I think we should just trade the picks for vets, I mean we got Terry Glen this way. I mean you can spin this anyway you want but no way this guy takes Ellis's spot next year.

I thought Al Singleton chose to take the path of least resistance instead of plugging the gap Cart hit :(

Suisham should of put a shoulder into Cart as well.

NFL Draftscout does a really solid job in player evaluations, and here's what they had to say about him:

"Carpenter is a smart and instinctive athlete with a good feel for blocking schemes and the awareness to quickly sniff out the ball when working through trash. He attacks the rush lanes with good aggression and has the hand punch to push the fullback back through the lanes, when he stays low in his pads. When he gets too erect in his stance, he will lose leverage and the result is the blocker latching on to his pads, causing him to struggle trying to shed"

He's a rookie playing on a team with 6 pretty solid LBs, be patient.

 I'm glad armchair GMs like you aren't running the team.

When he's losing ground to Rock Cartwright on a dead sprint, its not hard to figure out whey they moved him inside.

...on the forum yesterday that he shouldn't be in on special teams. A guy like Austin or Rector would have been a better choice, but we had to leave those guys at home in place of a kicker.

They'd do a swell job wedge busting on kickoff coverage.
