Thoughts on Jason Garrett

My staff and I met with Wade and his staff, going into his last year..Garrett sat next to me. I've posted this here before, but in a nutshell, he told me some things he would never do woth his QB, as soon. As he became HC...he started doing those very things...like calling plays at the LOS.
Was it on purpose? I have no proof to say it was...wouldn't make a difference anyway.
That was also the day that Wade invited me to downtown San Angelo for a few beers. It was, us two, Mack Brown, Nick Saban and Tommy Tubberville talking ball for a couple of hours. It was one of the privileges of my career. Great afternoon.
Is there anything you haven’t done? Any mountain you haven’t climbed? Or any celebrity that you haven’t personally hung out with? I’d say you’re a great candidate for the Most Interesting Man in the World if that beer company shoots new commercials.

Where did he go wrong? He wasn't a good coach. He never was.

He didn't go through the Darwinian process of working his way up through the ranks, proving himself, and earning his promotions like most coaches. Jerry was seduced by the glory days connection, the Troy and Moose endorsements, Daddy Garrett being a Jerry loyalist, the Ivy League degree, and the rest of the garbage that had nothing to do with being a good coach.

Still can't believe we wasted 13 years on him as OC and HC, but then Jerry is that big a selfish, nepotistic football moron.
Exactly, Garrett was hired due to nepotism and not talent.

This is why Aikman, Moose and Irvin need to stay in their lane.

I'm done with people saying Aikman would be the godsend GM - this guy would have paid Dak this ridiculous contract, kept MM and likely kept Garrett for another 5+ years. The reason we are where we are right now is because those glory day players won't stop giving JJ advice.

Too reiterate what Chocolate said about him being a crap coach, he went on to the Giants as an Offensive coordinator and looked historically bad. If he ever was a good coach then he would have at least been average with the Giants with poor talent, but he looked completely lost there.

So as a head coach the guy lacked instincts, lacked intelligence, he was not very aware and most likely fell into the traps of being comfortable and familiar and lazy the same approach the Jones' use in their jobs.

I've been very fortunate in my life. I thank God everyday for the opportunities that he lay in front of me...I took advantage of many of them and still am. Just last year I hosted a free camp for 160 local kids, with 3 former NFL players and will be hosting another this summer. I don't make a dime on any of my camps...I've never hung out with whiners....maybe we can meet up some day

JG just never had the goods. He was never a good coach.

He was a nepo hire by Jerry, and got an early "wunderkind" reputation because he was OC of the kickass 2007 Cowboys team. Eventually it turns out that that's because they had 13 Pro Bowlers, and not because of any visionary coaching by JG.

That happens in the NFL - young assistants get chances, and sometimes those assistants don't work out. But they rarely get their tenure dragged on for a decade after they've proven to be a bum. It takes an especially inept owner to keep doubling down on failure for that long, and that's Jerry.

Just as a person, JG seems like the perfect corporate VP type, all rah-rah and fake smiles and clapping in front of the troops. I bet he could deliver a frickin' great Q1 earnings powerpoint. But in big orgs, those corporate suit types are insulated by layers and layers of grunts that actually do the work. Football staffs are a lot smaller, and the HC and OC have a lot more involvement in the final product. Garrett was just thoroughly pedestrian at gameplanning offensive football, and he couldn't clap his way out of it.

The Gulf of Mexico should have been renamed to the Gulf of Ranching instead.

Most of my ventures ended 8 years ago, when I retire....now, I just take care of my dad, coach an occasional college all star game in Mexico and put a camp together, now and again. It was fun, at least I have some great memories.

I remember the quarterback competitions between him and Dak. I thought his place was building up his guys, not tear them down.
