Maybe Spencer should have a talk with Haley as well.

Spencer is SO close. I feel like there's just a tweak or two that he can make to turn these hurries into sacks. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't, but he's having an impact. One step quicker and I feel like he's already got 4-5 sacks this year. Anyone else think this?

I'm hoping. I do see some positives from Spencer right now I just hope he continues to work hard and we start seeing results as we continue the season.

No, like Ware the first four weeks he had no inside move. Trying to beat people with speed rush. Ware rediscovered his inside move, Spencer never had one. Until he does he will continue to get ridden out of the play by the OT when rushing.

I do.

I wasn't sold on his all around game and I was one of the very few who was disapointed when Ellis left. I really appreciate what Ellis did for us.

That being said Spencer is all over the place and he is so close to having a big year right now. Its not showing up on the stat sheet but he is very active for us on the field.

Definitely.

He might be a little like Miles. It's possible he knows he's a pretty good player, but if he had a real breakout game -- maybe a two or three sack game or even an interception with a nice return -- his confidence could skyrocket and his game could go to the next level.

I agree. He seems more instinctive and he's getting better at getting pressure. He's in his first full year. I think he'll be a solid player for us for some time. He might turn out to be better than solid.

If your responsibility on a play is that outside rush, you can't just swim inside or it ruins the defense and let's the QB get out easy. IOW, I think the coaching staff is telling our outside rushers not to make that move inside. Demarcus Ware has earned the right to (every once in a while) say "screw you guys, I'm looping back in" but Spencer can't do that. So, in our defense, the hope is that he either (a) finds a way to get that half-step quicker and turn hurries into sacks or (b) if he can't find it, our front line gets more pressure, and the QB has nowhere to step up into.

I think Spencer has a good bullrush and therefore probably a decent inside move. But if you watch our defense long enough I think it becomes apparent that almost all calls do not allow the edge rusher to take the inside lane. Those inside lanes of the OTs are the responsibility of our ILBs.

Criticism: When he gets matchups with backs and TEs he needs to beat them. He's gotten some, and he's lost. That is a legit problem IMO.

Confidence is huge.

Actually, on the play where Ware forced the fumble, Spencer had an amazing pass rush, so much I thought it was Ware at first. He beat the OT with a quick move, and then beat the RB with a quick swim move. He hit Ryan and grabbed the fumble. Prob would have had a sack if Ware didn't get there first.

But, he beats two guys in less than a second each. It was very impressive

More arrests than sacks in the past 11 games is a problem, IMO.

That being said, I cannot count how many times this season several players have been so close to getting sack, but just needed another .5 second.

Spencer and Ware included.

Spencer getting close is getting real old. For 6 weeks many have been saying "so close." Close to a sack, close to an INT, etc.

Close ain't good enough. At some point, he has to produce.

I noticed this too, don't think theres a massive issue and actually thought he played really well this week. I'd like to see him bullrushing a bit more in pass/run situations, keeps the lane smaller but still puts pressure on the passer if necessary. He was second there to the majority of the sacks and pressures which is good to see.

Was impressed with Ware yesterday - stress fracture obviously isn't bothering him too much. Nice inside move thanks Haley. Need him to show up at Philly now - big games need big plays from big players.

But he is playing good so that cant be dismissed.

If I were offered Merriman for Spencer straight up there is no way i'd make that trade after watching both play.

Merriman is getting stuck on blocks and just doesn't look active at all.

Spencer is on the rise and will get his eventually.

I cannot believe the guys who think Spencer is struggleing. The guy is all over the field. He IMO is having his best year since he has became a Cowboy only its not showing up on the stat sheet. That was Spencer and Ware that collapse the pocket early on and someone else got the sack, that was Spencer who forced Ryan to step up when Ware was being tripled team but Ware got the sack when Ryan step up and made an attemped to escape the rush. All year this guy has been great against the rush, good in coverage and putting pressure on the QB and you guys don't think he is playing well because he hasn't registered a sack? Wow!

On Snellings big run, Spencer tried to go around the blocker instead of going through the blocker. Which led to the huge hole.

You do realize that the strong side LB in Wade's 3-4 still has pressure/sack opportunities, right? Spencer isn't good at getting to the QB, that's a fault in his game, most players have them. Spencer is not a perfect fit in the scheme, he's a good fit because he does other things well, but the defense would definitely benefit from added pressure from his position.

Yeah, he does. But not nearly as much as the weak side guy. But like Ware's first 4 games when he got there a few times but just didn't get the sack, Spencer's season has been like that. His 10 QB pressures are only next to Ware's 12 on the team. He's getting there and I know that because I go back and watch the line play in all our games. And he's a very good fit because his strong suits in run play and pass coverage are what is required from the strong side.

You apparently don't watch the games closely because you don't know these things.
