I wasn't a big fan of his heading into the draft as he offers zero pass rush abilities and did struggle against Avilia in the playoffs. In my opinion, right now he is more like a Dalvin Thomlinson with the potential to be more. Out of all our coaches, I trust Dan Quinn the most to be able to develop a player. After listening to Mazi Smith, he appears to be humbled and willing to work.

Do like that the front office finally prioritized the position with high draft capital. Quinn definitely has a big stick in the room now. This type of player can have a bigger impact on the entire defense, players like Osa/Lve, even Parsons should really benefit from his presence. They needed a long-term answer at the position and it was a huge position of need. If he can just become a dominate run defender it will be an excellent fit as we have needed to fix this weakness for years.

Was this pick a reach? Would I have taken another player?

Heard the Chiefs called after the pick was made and told the Cowboys he was going to be their pick if they made the trade with them, so it appears he wasn't a reach at 26. I had Nolan Smith, Porter, Mayer ahead of him and would of been fine with any of the three instead of Smith. However, why did Smith/Porter fall so far?

Meh at first now just happy it wasn't a TE or CB and I hope they stay away from both in the 2nd round too! Guys I want now......

Hyatt
Sanders
Avila
Torrence
Schmitz
Bergeron
Wright
Simpson

In that order

Think Smith has the greatest chance to impact next season. Others that were being considered such as CBS, TEs or Edges might be better prospects but might struggle to get on the field the 1st year. It seems with the additions of Gilmore and Cooks there is a sense of urgency next year and Smith comes right it as the best run stuffer on the team.

I told you to keep an eye on Mazi in March. Watch the Michigan/Ohio State game. He took over that game against pro level offensive linemen. The Cowboys are RAS score drafters. They believe they have the coaching to mold clay. Nolan Smith has an injury history and his stats are meh. I don’t know what is up with Porter. He is better then Banks. Will Pittsburgh take him first tonight.

I had to see it, to believe it taking a two down player high in the draft. Just shows that they really have Quinn's trust. MM better have a breakthrough season or Quinn will be our HC next season.

We can put a run defensive front 7 of Tank, Smith, Hankins, and Gholston in the front four with Parsons, LVE and Wilson as the linebackers/SS. Good luck running on us.

Big fan of the player…full round early.

With Nolan, Murphy and Porter still available it’s really hard to get excited about the pick but I’ll be rooting for him.

Definition of reach for need.

That is what always stinks about only one round. The draft is always the grand scheme of things.

I like Mazi a lot. But if we somehow end up with a guy like Avila/Mingo in round 2 and a beast in round 3? I love it more

He was going 26 to Kansas City. Same as Tyler Smith to Tennessee last season.

I was underwhelmed watching him late last season. Hopefully they continue their recent streak of nailing evaluations.
I am glad they at least FINALLY addressed the position
I said yesterday that drafting defense with the first selection sets up the rest of the draft better than if you had gone offense so I'm intrigued by how day 2 will go.
I am SO glad that the words Michael Mayer weren't uttered when our selection was announced

He was more of a slight reach as many board had him in the mid 30's, don't think he would of been there at 58.

I'm hoping we draft players I graded higher than him in the 2nd and possibly third rounds ala 2017. Or we could draft worse players too.

I feel like I watched a different player from everyone else.

One big positive is I do think his run stopping ability is fairy bust proof.

Fingers crossed his pass rush develops and we got a stud.
