Thoughts on Throw-Backs

Throw 'em back! Man, I'm getting sick of looking at these gaudy, ugly uniforms. I'm watching MNF, and to see Denver come out in those uniforms they beat us in, again last night was unbelievable. The players look like the Munchkins from the "Wizard of Oz".

When the league first came out with these things, I thought, "Well, once a season is O.K." Now, teams are wearing them half the time some seasons. I'm not talking the old 49ers block letter uniforms. Those were pretty nice, and the team decided to use them full-time. Most of them, though, are just butt-ugly! The Steelers, Broncos, etc. Even the sixties Cowboys are a one-time/season thing.

About the only team whose throw-backs aren't shockers are the Browns. They haven't changed in 70+ years. (Of course, those are ugly year-round too, though..ha ha).

Please, Mr. Goodell, enough of these nasty uniforms. Let's let the sixties die with bell-bottoms & afros. I'm 54, so I remember them, so it's not like I don't respect history. But, let's get on with the present. In fact, I wouldn't mind seeing the Cowboys in those swooshes that run down the thighs of many college team uniforms today.

Survey: Which throw-backs do you like the least/best?

Yeah, i agree, once a year is cool, but i really see no rhyme or reason as to when they where them now. The titans had the Oilers on again, once is enough.

The Titans wore them because it was an AFL throwback game.

I posted my thoughts on throwback uniforms last night in the game thread, but I'll do so again here:

Certain uniforms become endearing and iconic because they represent a team. The team is eventually known by its uniform, and the uniform becomes synonymous with a chapter in the team's history.

When teams wear different uniforms every week, there's no opportunity for the uniform to endear itself and become ingrained in the mind of the viewer.

I was thinking the same. It's becoming a silly gimmick now and it's old. I'm sure the league likes the option of furthering revenue with the possibility people will buy these jerseys, but all in all they're ugly and it's overdone.

It will happen all season long when the original AFL franchises face off against each other. It is part of the 50th anniversary celebration.

Those aren't throwbacks. They are throw ups. They were hideous and served no purpose other than stroking Jerry's ego. I am glad he stopped having the team wear them. Probably superstitious and holds them responsible for Dallas losing the NFC championship game at the end of the 1994 season. I know I do.

I always loved these jerseys, and I think it would be awesome if we saw the boys wear them again despite the supposed bad luck they brought...

Half of them aren't even real throwbacks, they are crude approximations of what a throwback might have looked like (Pittsburgh) or they are just shameless marketing inventing an "alternate" jersey to sell to stupefied consumers (Seattle). That said, the Pats throwbacks are the bomb.....

Agreed. I haven't missed them a bit except for these players that wore them.

This isn't really a throwback. It was just a promotional type thing to boost sales. But since they wore them in official NFL games, I guess technically it's a throwback jersey.
