You get these type of games early on in the season, where many players didn't play in any preseason games. It wasn't just the Cowboys today; 49ers, Lions, Rams, Ravens all had bad losses this weekend. There is a lot to fix, but 1 loss in September has no barring on the season's outcome.

Defense

-This looked like the same defense that got blown out in their playoff loss to the Packers. Is it a coincidence that the Packers run a similar scheme as the Saints? Kubiak comes for the same coaching tree. A lot of motion, misdirection and outside, zone scheme. This has been the scheme that has given the Cowboys fits for the last 5 seasons. Mike Zimmer has had a good record going against this scheme in his history, so there is hope that this can be fixed.
-Similar things I saw from previous years, defensive ends played too aggressive giving up the edge and our linebackers could shed any blocks. When you see Diggs/Carson needing to make a tackle, the defense is in trouble. Lack of run defense reared it's ugly head once again. I have stated in the past the outside runs are the biggest issue for this run defense, far more then up the middle.
-Reason why they couldn't get off the field all day was that they couldn't get the Raiders in many 3rd and longs, very easy conversions if they even made it to third down.
-No defense will be successful giving up many chunk plays like what happened today.

Offense

-Going into this game, I expected to see a similar tough defense like what we faced against the Browns the prior week. It is very tough to consistently run against this front seven. Got to pass to open up the run against this defense.
-Although it didn't have much success, I liked how they tried multiple backs to see if they can find a hot hand.
-It is clearly evident that this team lacks playmakers outside of Lamb, Ferguson. Very easy to defend if all they had to do is take out Lamb. Tolbert showed flashes, Brooks in essence ended the game with his stumble that led to an int before half. Don't know what to make out of Cooks, but this team needs another true, top receiver, which probably won't be addressed until next offseason.
-Guyton had another up and down game, which is expected to happen this year.
-I know many want to blame Dak and the offense for the loss, but no team is going to win when your defense gives up 5 straight TD's.

It only gets tougher next week when an 0-2 Ravens team comes to town. They need to fix their run defense right away or we can expect even worse results.

I was at the game. The D didn’t even show up. NO ran the same plays over and over. Kamara on the toss over and over. The secondary has to make all the tackles. SF would have scored 75!

On offense Mike was not aggressive at all. Like throw the damn ball! It was dink and dunk because we have no one that get open outside of Lamb folks. Be afraid. Be very afraid. The online looks bad

Clearly that have to add another legitimate receiver, just not good enough. Losing Ferguson makes defending the offense that more easier. Think OL struggled caused they had to pass to catch up and not enough people getting open, where Dak had to hold onto the football.

I actually expect a win next week. McCarthy's seem to do that. However it wont be long before they are drinking their own bathwater again

My apologies for being gross about it, but I feel that this is time for gross

Make all the excuses you want (not the OP) but at the end of the day the pre season only changed the last couple of years and the Cowboys have been trash for longer.

End of story.

And people anyone says it, no, itsd not Jerry now. theres someone whos worse.

After watching this game I realized how much those major coaching and quarterbacking issues still remain with this team.
Those issues go beyond trying to minimize this humiliating loss into "its only one game, there's a whole season left."

Because the hopium based crowd will still believe in the one game at a time mindset even after this Saints game. But ultimately they will be disappointed by this team's final outcome.
The not so optimistic fanbase already sees the writing on the wall and doesn't need 15 more games to know.

After 2 games and this one especially, they're still the same old Cowboys. And they ain't changing.

And a minimum of 5 more years of the same.
Sad times.

Agree, and I see Lamb had the same numbers at the end of game as he did at the half. Thought he would have over 200 yards being behind.

I often agree with your assessment but not this time
This was not just another early season loss, this exposed our weaknesses including soft culture, entitled players, lack of intensity and discipline, bad coaching, players playing out of position (Micah)
I expect a better showing next week but same result

inability to stop the run gave me post-season vibes.
cowboys offense couldn't cash in those drives that ended in fg's.
again...just like in post-season.
very disappointing.
but its only week 2.
season not even warmed up yet.
still have no idea what this team is.
saints look strong now.
will they look the same in nov?
lotta football left.
bottom line...not good today.
very disappointing.

These things happen. Once behind, it's hard to catch up if the defense can't stop the opponent. The lead gets so great that our offense must be one-dimensional to catch up. At that point, you are pretty much beat.

Good breakdown, amazing no matter what the motion and misdirection always seems to throw the Cowboys off their game a couple times per year. It's as if they watched no film while the other team knew exactly what to do. This game reminded me a lot of the Cardinals game last year, one we came out totally unprepared to play, except it was worse because the Saints have good weapons.

The Cowboys should have considered jamming the Saints WRs and playing closer to the line. Sure you risk giving up bigger plays but atleast you don't give them a clean release giving more time for the pass rush. We were playing 8-9 yards off the line of scrimmage often and still giving up big plays anyway.

Offensively, McCarthy called such a great game in the 1st half last week but has really looked predictable and uninventative since. Utilize the screen game more with Vaughn, add in more motion, mix in some delayed handoffs, misdirection running plays, and if your receivers are struggling with separation bunch them up and create natural picks to break the zone.

I admit that I've been coveting this Shanahan style offense for us , more than this uninspiring Tex Coast McCarthy offense .

But do the Jones trust young inexperienced Shanahan style coaches for HC consideration ?

Agreed. These defensive issues will be the reason we lose in the playoffs (or they will be the reason we don’t make the playoffs).
