Now that the 2015 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony is behind us, we begin to look forward to next year. In each of the last two Hall of Fame classes we have had a member of the Dallas Cowboys receive his gold jacket. So who among the many great players who have worn the blue and silver should be the next to find a permanent place in Canton?

Today I look at the three best candidates for Hall of Fame Consideration.

3. Harvey Martin, Defensive End (1973-1983)

I sometimes wonder if I am not the world’s biggest Harvey Martin fan. I find it completely unfathomable that a player of Martin’s caliber isn’t already in the Hall of Fame. In fact, Martin isn’t even in the Cowboys own Ring of Honor. Harvey Martin’s biggest mistake in life may have been being born too soon. He played most of his career before the quarterback sack became an official stat.

The NFL officially recognizes only 10 of Martin’s career sacks, but the Cowboys kept their own sack tally before the league started and credited Martin with 114 career QB take-downs. That would place him in the top 20 on the all-time list. The team also reported 23 sacks for Martin in 1977, which would still be the league record if it were considered official...

Guy I want to see is Lee Roy Jordan. I know John McClain of the Houston Chronicle has pushed to get Lee Roy Jordan into the HOF on more than one occasion but did not get the votes needed.

It's sad that a guy from Houston is the one pushing for Jordon.

The primary reason for these Cowboys not being in is not actually the bias of the North East media, although that is a big obstacle. The problem is the local HOF voter(s) are the ones that are required to make the case and stand on the table for "their" guy. Unfortunately, the Dallas HOF voter is Rick Gosselin and he hates the Cowboys.

Seems that way, as successful as the Late 60's and 70's Cowboys where you would think more would be in the HOF like a Lee Roy Jordan.

Martin, Jordan, Howley, Too Tall, Cliff Harris, Cornell Green are all names that quickly come to mind and wouldnt shock me if they made it
I'm not saying Quincy should be in the talks but the requirements could come down a notch. theres a lot of excellent players from all teams that arent in and should be

Chuck Howley was probably the best linebacker that every played for Dallas.

Howley is the obvious #1, and I like Martin at #3.

As great as Woodson was, Harris should be #2.

Harris
6 Pro Bowls
3 1st team All Pro
HOF All-Decade 1st team
HOF finalist

Woodson
5 Pro Bowls
3 1st team All Pro
HOF semi-finalist

I have to admit I wasn't old enough to watch Howley play.

I took a look at this stats and awards (specifically the 5 x 1st team All Pro) and I'm very impressed.

Someone else here said it so I am just repeating it, could it be that he was simply just outshined by his contemporaries Butkus and Nitsche and the HOF voters are only willing to put in X number of players a specific position from a specific era?

It's the whole reason they have a HOF veteran committee who's job it is to swing back and elect those kind of players. He stats seem to be at least as good at Dave Robinson who made it two years ago.

I barely saw him, but the old timers say he was every bit the linebacker that Lilly was a tackle.

Dont hold your breath for Chuck Howley or Cliff Harris. Harris was like Bates. Hard hitter but slow compared to corners then and especially now.

Harris 6 probowls 3 first team
Howley 6 probowls 5 first team
Green 5 probowls 3 first team

these were all great players. I remember they meant a lot to the team and its success. If they cant get in I think the requirements are a little to high. In 20-30 years when people go to the hall to see their favorite team and players these names will all but be forgotten and shouldn't be. If Swann and Namath are in (and I think they should be) with the awards they amassed so should these Cowboys as well as Martin and Jordan. I think the HOF is a little to elite right now-guess its just me

Dave Robinson got in because he was on the board of directors of the Hall of Fame for 27 years.

Robinson was not the player Howley was.

Robinson
3 Pro Bowls
1 1st team All Pro

Howley
6 Pro Bowls
5 1st team All Pro
SBMVP

Hard to disagree with that analysis.

If you sniff around some of the other Packer HOF players of that era you will see similar oddities....

Beyond Dave Robinson would you believe Ray Nitschke only was selected to the ProBowl 1 time as was selected 1st team All-Pro just twice?

Paul Hornung only played for 9 years, rushed for only 3711 yards, and was named 1st team All-Pro just twice?

You can't compare players from different era's..At that time Harris was one of the best players to play....a HOF player from that era.....A great player is a great player, doesn't matter when he played..

Well, well, when Howley and Harris get into the HOF let me know and I will send a fruit basket and a congratularium letter to each and you a "I am sorry I doubted you and them" email. I just do not see these great but not ready for prime time HOF players.

You are right. You cannot compare players from different eras. But if players from different eras were ever brought onto the field (in a strange, parallel universe) I doubt Harris could be a starter in today's NFL. And Howley would be a marginal player in today's NFL.

Same thing, in 50 years, I bet the Universe of Texas Longhorns of the future could handle today's cowboys. That is how athletes evolve and how the game evolves. Strange but true.
