Harris started for 9 seasons, and went to the Pro Bowl 6 times.

Bates started for 3 seasons, and went to the Pro Bowl once for special teams.

As you can see, I do not dwell on yestiday's players. So let me apend that statement: Harris was slow like Bates. Each were hard hitters and one earned more honors. But then again, Bates had more hair.

Dont hold your breath for Chuck Howley or Cliff Harris. Harris was like Bates. Hard hitter but slow compared to corners then and especially now.

So a safety that played 40 years ago is slower than today's corners. Glad you cleared that up for us. o_O

The beautiful Harvey Martin was my favorite player growing up, planting opposing QBs in the turf is always a beautiful thing.

I'm a big Harvey Martin fan and it's an unfathomable travesty that he's not in the ROH, much less the HOF.
Jerry do the right thing.

You are right. You cannot compare players from different eras. But if players from different eras were ever brought onto the field (in a strange, parallel universe) I doubt Harris could be a starter in today's NFL. And Howley would be a marginal player in today's NFL.

Same thing, in 50 years, I bet the Universe of Texas Longhorns of the future could handle today's cowboys. That is how athletes evolve and how the game evolves. Strange but true.
which just goes to show how much you are a bandwagon fan. No appreciation for the history of the game- that is pretty sad for a self proclaimed expert.

Howley without a doubt Is the biggest obscenity as regards the HOF from the Cowboys side of things. Robinson was nowhere near the player Howley was. Not even close.

But once again being part of a great team greases the skids. How many Squeelers would have made the HOF if not for the 4 rings? Bradshaw for one- a true joke as a HOF player. Swann and Stallworth- if Pearson is not in then they should not be.

Frankly only Webster, Green, Lambert and Ham should be in the HOF from the Squeelers. Franco was not that great but he put up great numbers- put him somewhere else and he is nothing but a footnote.

For the Pack Starr, Gregg, Adderly, Taylor, Davis, Ringo, Wood. Horning is a very borderline candidate.

Personally I think you should have a minimum of 5 first team ALL PRO selections to be considered.

Now that the 2015 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony is behind us, we begin to look forward to next year. In each of the last two Hall of Fame classes we have had a member of the Dallas Cowboys receive his gold jacket. So who among the many great players who have worn the blue and silver should be the next to find a permanent place in Canton?

Today I look at the three best candidates for Hall of Fame Consideration.

3. Harvey Martin, Defensive End (1973-1983)

I sometimes wonder if I am not the world’s biggest Harvey Martin fan. I find it completely unfathomable that a player of Martin’s caliber isn’t already in the Hall of Fame. In fact, Martin isn’t even in the Cowboys own Ring of Honor. Harvey Martin’s biggest mistake in life may have been being born too soon. He played most of his career before the quarterback sack became an official stat.

The NFL officially recognizes only 10 of Martin’s career sacks, but the Cowboys kept their own sack tally before the league started and credited Martin with 114 career QB take-downs. That would place him in the top 20 on the all-time list. The team also reported 23 sacks for Martin in 1977, which would still be the league record if it were considered official...

Still remember the term " Martinized" referring to his sacks, and a Dry Cleaning company that used that term.

Yeth, i here that being fast is a good thing in NFL football. And to think that we thought the opposite with marginal-speed Harris and too-slow Bill Bates. Stick with me and you will learn, glasshopper!

I do appreciate the history of the game. I even appreciate the leather helmets, the segregation of the game (which elevated many players over those with much more merit but who were not allowed to play), the "git up and shake it off" policies of head injuries in the past and the horrifically slow play of many in the NFL in the past. What is not to like??? The history of the game be important, but all in all, I enjoy the modern game with really fast and strong players. Hey, I am sure if you channel surf you can catch a NFL Films game with very slow players of the 1960s where they show a football spinning (in slow motion) as it nears the player and coaches on the sidelines wearing shiny suits and cheerleaders with big hair. These are really good and stuff, i mean, historically speaking.

Worth repeating: the HoF selection committee should be expanded beyond the 40 something writers and their discussions/votes made public.

It's unbelievable that Chuck Howley isn't in. I don't put much stock into the HOF though since it's WRITERS that vote them in, not people that actually know the game (unless I'm wrong on that).

How Drew Pearson isn't in the HOF is beyond, the greatest clutch receiver I ever saw.
