Three possible Kick/Punt Returners for the Dallas Cowboys
By Kelsie VanderWijst

When Dwayne Harris left the Dallas Cowboys, he left multiple positions behind that are now up for grabs. Last Thursday, the Dallas Cowboys held interviews for the position(s). Head Coach Jason Garrett was clear though the position competition is still wide open. “We look for a guy who can step in,” Garrett said (dallascowboys.com).

Who should fill his vacancy for kickoff and punt returns this season? Someone who has: good hands, is fast, has the ability to gain extra yards, has good decision making (fair catch, return, etc…) and ability to find running lane, etc…

Here is three possible players who can take on these roles for the Dallas Cowboys:

Cole Beasley

+ Fielded 10 punts in career

+ Has good hands

+ Quickness

+ Ability to get extra yards (2014 yards after catch was 250/ 6.8 yards/reception after the catch)

+ Willingness to take on the job. All for any extra opportunity to get the ball in his hands (dallascowboys.com)

Experience

High risk special teams position

Found new role on offense

Overwork him every Sunday could lead to injury...

Whatever happens I just hope it doesn't end up being Beasley back there. I just think he'll be too important for the offense to risk having his small frame getting banged up back there.

I'd rather us fill that role with a WR, DB, or RB that's active on game day but further down the depth chart.

Id like to see Dunn back there but I wouldn't mind Beasely back there either full time as field position is pretty huge in the NFL.

I think that Beasley has become way too valuable as a receiver for him to be put at risk as a kick return option.

Lucky is substantially ahead of the rest of the field in terms of his production, explosion and quick-twitch ability.
Of course, he'll be obliged to prove that his fumbleitis is something that happened once but won't occur again.

Reggie Dunn simply doesn't offer enough in the receiving area of his abilities to render his roster spot secure.

I don't want Beasley back there either. I don't want him hurt and I don't think he's a big threat based on what I can remember of him returning so far.

+ Known athleticism

+ Ability to bounce back after mistake

LOL I noticed the same thing. Such careless "writing" out there these days.

I think Whitehead pretty much already has the job locked up. He has been getting a lot of reps with the starters from what I hear with Dez/Beas out. I can't think of any other receiver who has earned that fifth spot more than him.

This can all change with another return fumble though.

Could be the return guy is not on the team yet. Can get someone after the cut downs. But it seems it is Whiteheads job to lose. I hope he shows something at WR though too. I would hate to lose a good 5th WR that can develop, though time is very limited, so does that matter at that point. As a 5th WR, well don't wan to use the term dime a dozen for lack of a better term. But if a WR impresses that much as not to expose losing him. Then they need to keep 6 WR's.
Don't like to use a roster spot for a return guy only, but better that then keeping a guy just for kicking off as they done in the past.

Probably not gonna happen
He was cut
Right now it's lucky's job to lose
Not only does he have good return skills he has great speed that I think they would like to get on the field some

I dont know if Whitehead is gonna offer us much if anything as a WR this year, but getting him on the field as a KR could go along way towards his development. Get him used to the speed of the NFL game and taking NFL hits. I think he has the ability to develope into a backup for Beasley, and maybe a guy we can use in 4 WR sets to maximize speed. But I dont think thats this year.

Also, Whitehead was returning punts with many players on ST's that won't be on the team. Once they get all the front line players on ST's. Yes he can utilize that speed and quickness.
His fumble, as he was in an awkward position can be thrown out for now. We seen Harris muff a few at times too. and just muffed, or fumbled. As opposed to being a players first time returning in the NFL, and turned around with 3 players right there. A bit concerned on the concentration of holding onto the ball, but that can be corrected, now as he has experienced that.
I want to see how he responds this next game.

Yes, agree. I just responded to another post. The more I thought about it. He was playing with guys that won't be on the team, so once ST's are set, he can use that speed and quickness. Work his way onto the field as a WR, like all 5th depth guys do. As for the fumble, let's see how he responds and does against SF.

Honestly I think playing as KR helped Austin develop as a WR.

A positive about that fumble is that he really seemed to bounce back. Alot of young players trying to make a roster may have shrunk in their shell afterwards. Shows mental tougness

If lucky can be the return guy and develope into a decent reciever it gives us so serious speed
He is still raw as a reciever but I think he can still contribute some
Just his speed alone can open up some things over the middle. He goes deep and blows by his guy that's gonna pull a safety over and that's gonna open up someone
He won't do a lot as a reciever but he can get his feet wet, learn the position and contribute a little

Yes, Stretch the field, open things up underneath, and for crossing patterns. That one works well with Dez coming across the middle heading to the sidelines. Or opens up someone else is Dez is double team. Witten or Beasley over the middle.
Then they can set up for a long bomb with him later.

While I hope that Whitehead ultimately ends up with job, I do not want to see him back there week 1. Just don't trust him to hold onto the ball. Ideally, Beasley or Wilcox will be the primary PR for the first few weeks, with Dez doing it situationally, ie, opponents punting from their own end zone. Around game 5 where we activate Hardy and are likely to release a guy like McCray, I'd then like to see Whitehead start getting returns situationally so he can take over full time.
