Three year window means we must spend in FA

We have Dak on a rookie contract for three more years. We have Zeke on a rookie contract for four more years. Much like the Seahawks did when they had Wilson on a rookie contract, we need to spend big now before we have to resign Dak and Zeke. This is our window where we have two legit league MVP candidates who are going to command huge dollars when their rookie deals expire. We will not get another window like this. And with the long-term Romo money off the books, there simply is NO EXCUSE for not spending big at DE and CB with front-loaded three year deals. I know Stephen has said they will not be big spenders, but if they cannot see this limited golden opportunity, the FO is really foolish. Drafting a rookie DE or CB at the bottom of the round who will take three years to develop into an impact player (or never, see Byron Jones) is not the answer. Find a proven blue chip DE (JPP, Jabaal Sheard, Melvin Ingram) and CB (Trumaine Johnson, AJ Bouye, Stephan Gillmore) and make the move this year! Signed, we the fans who have suffered too long with the league's worst 3rd down defense.
Why can't Jones get 3 years? You said it takes 3 years but then say or never see Byron Jones........I don't get the hate some of these guys get. If they aren't yall favorite then they are trash and will never be anything. The same ones wanted Wilcox and Heath gone now they want them as the starters. Y'all flip so damn much it's pathetic

I don't understand

I know you don't
Im not being snarky, why must you? I like Jones just fine. But the issue is we have two MVP caliber players at positions that will be very expensive for their second contracts. So spend in free agency before you have to re-sign them. Not sure how Byron Jones enters the equation?

If Romo doesn't want to be a back-up in Dallas the Cowboys will move him.

I expect if we can't get a pick from a team he wants to go to we will cut him.

People here are saying "we have all the power" - that is true but you don't use your power to screw over the player who was the face of the franchise for years

Anyway, I disagree with the premise that there is a limited window. Your real window is defined by when you have a good QB. Everything else you can work around.

You don't see teams like the Packers, Steelers, Ravens or Patriots going on panic spending sprees because they think they can only contend the next couple years. Every year your starting QB isn't garbage is a year the window is (or should be) open.

Well, he can just retire if the Cowboys try to screw him by trading him to Cleveland or something.

And we'd never sign another UFA because they'd see how poorly we treated one of the most respected members of our team.

I swear some of you really don't get that there is more to this than just getting a draft pick. Decisions like this don't happen in a bubble.

Jerry is going to screw over a valued player? A guy who he has a personal relationship with? Players would never trust him again.

If you really believe Romo will retire I have done prime swamp land in SC that I would like you to buy

I would call his bluff

We've built this team slowly and methodically so that we don't have a 3 year window where we have to go all in with an up and down straight draw.

What we did on offense we need to do on defense. We need consistent investment on the defense. And no more using two picks for one in defense. Whereas on offense we were content to draft who was available and even trade down when convenient.

Let's not try to shortcut the defense. We didn't on offense.

The issue facing the team is clearly on the defensive side of the ball.

There's no one in free agency at DE to waste a ton of money on unless say Chandler Jones shakes free, but he is not.

There are some CBs that intrigue me............ Gilmore for example but he's going to cost a lot and I am not sure we need to spend that much on a CB.

One guy I would look at............. Jefferson, SS from the Cardinals. He's better than Church and Wilcox.

Maybe you should read what you said about Jones

A. Dak and Zeke aren't going anywhere any time until we decide they aren't productive any more....that's how it works with great players.
B. We don't have money to spend this offseason, especially not big money...we are currently in worse shape than any team in the NFL, considerably over next year's salary cap already.

If we get rid of Romo and run some of his money into 2018, we may have enough to get our own guys signed and maybe some moderate signings like this past year. Build through the draft.

I said he has not developed into an impact player. Sorry, I didn't realize I was talking to his mom.
That's not what you said. You said guys need 3 years to develop......or never in Jones case.

He has 2 years in the league why he doesn't get the 3 years?

Neither Dak nor Zeke is going anywhere. They will be Cowboys for life. JJ will be sure of it.
