He gets open and Dak will hit him. After that he is a beast to bring down. Up to the staff.

...teach him to run the old classic 10.5 yard button hook...throw ball 9 feet in the air...either its a catch or a pass interference.

Go Cowboys!
I’m a fan. Looks like a red zone specialist to me. Height. Long arms. Good jumper. You gotta pay attention to him in the red zone, which can loosen the box up for Zeke. Let’s have Bailey kicking for 1 point instead of 3 this year.

It's not that simple. Throwing 10 yard jump balls is not a good plan - it requires perfection to throw exactly the right spot that is too high for the defense, but still just within the reach of Gathers, and if the throw is a bit high it would lead to an easy INT. An open receiver at 10 yards is a much better target. Plus it hangs the receiver out to dry by making him vulnerable to being hit while in the air and reaching for the ball. Plus, there is no running after the catch. At most that play makes sense in the red zone only. Accordingly, to make the team Gathers will need to have convinced the coaches he can do more than that.

Cowboy fans got used to Romo to Dez as the great unstoppable jump ball. They see jump balls like that for Rico, and think it's the same thing. It's not. What made Romo to Dez so unstoppable was how often they could convert it, not that you got to see the ones that worked on a highlight reel.

It's unlikely Rico can convert at such a high level. But I wonder if they've ever bothered to find out. Just put Dak, Rico, and Jones out there for 20 minutes and see how many Rico comes down with. I'd pay a dollar to see that.

The difference with Rico and Dez is that Rico could potentially give you a blocker as well. It's the run/pass threat that would make Rico really valuable in the red zone. Until then, he's a big guy who can make highlight reel catches, but not likely at a high enough rate to make it worthwhile.

rico has 1 big advantage dez in receiving.
his huge mass insulates him better when catching in tight coverage with contact.
that helps him catch even when not doing jump balls, where some one like jarwin plays small and more likely to 'fall' down when going for contested balls (like interception last night)

There are 35-40 TEs on NFL rosters that are 6'6---or at least as tall as Gathers.

Just sayin

Yeah, but are they faster than a speeding bullet and can they leap tall buildings in a single bound?

Romo and Rico used to destroy the first team defense in practice.

Problem is, that requires high-point throws that Dak can't make, and Rico doesn't seem interested in learning the playbook for Dak.

They keep on trying to temper expectations by mentioning Rico's lack of the basics and inability to block. I think at this point he's making the team, so I guess we'll see how much that really matters when Week 1 rolls around.

He's the only tight end proving to be a receiving threat right now. So unless one of the other tight ends is secretly having a good preseason behind doors, they're going to need Rico out there to help Dak at least from time to time.

At the very least, I could see Rico being an absolute nightmare in the redzone for defenses.
