Talk about making a pressure putt. He needed to sink a 20 footer to send the US Open to an 18 hole playoff tomorrow and he did it.

I swear I'm going to try and talk the golf fans at work into a long lunch at Sam's where we can watch the Open.

The guy is simply the greatest golfer ever.

Not yet.

Jack was just as good of a pressure putter. Until Tiger beats Jack's records, Jack is the best ever.

The records are irrelevant, at this point, since Tiger will no doubt break them, unless he suddenly decides to retire out of the blue.

He's the best golfer, ever, and it's really not even a close contest.

Tiger reminds me alot of Aikman : calm, cool under pressure, makes the hard stuff look easy

No - Aikman is not even top 5 QB's all time. Not in top 25 football players all time.

Its Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods - best ever. Wodds is on pace to break all Jacks record and is approaching being more dominant - if that is possible.

Would have been great to see those two in prime, same equipment and go at it. My gut take is Majors would be near 50/50. Jack had better competition in his era. Palmer, Trevino, Miller, Player, Floyd, Watson - jmo.

That was a clutch putt -

The dumbest quote in history, and it's really not even a close contest.

Tiger is a fantastic golfer and every bit as good as Jack but it would sure be nice to see these gutless wonders Tiger's playing against grow a pair wouldn't it?

You do not have a choice in who your competition is. I think it is clear that Tiger is not facing the same level- but at the same time he is incredibly consistent and for golfers that is one of the toughest things to do.
right now it would be hard to decided who was better. BUT if Woods keeps this up for another 5 years I doubt there will be much dispute then.

Whats this Tiger's THIRD knee surgery on his left knee already? I wouldnt doubt that ends his career a little early. He puts so much strain on that knee during his swing.

Jack has 73 top 10 finishes in majors. Tiger would have to finish in the top ten EVERY TIME until 2019 to tie that record.

Jack has 19 second place finishes in majors. NINETEEN!

Don't get me wrong Tiger is AMAZING but the competition these days was NOT EVEN CLOSE to what Jack put up with. It doesnt matter if you don't have a choice who your competition is. Tom Watson, Arnie Palmer, Gary Player, Ben Hogan, Seve Ballesteros, Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd.

Jacks competition was WAY MORE consistent that what Tiger goes against.

Plus, the equipment technology Tiger has over Jack.

Jack is the best.

Tiger might be the best athlete ever.

I cannot think of anyone who dominates as much as Tiger.

^He is without a doubt the best golfer IMO, but I don't think he's the best athlete.

The top end of the competition may have been better when Jack was playing, but there's no doubt there are more world-class golfers now than there were back then.

You said it yourself, those guys were consistently at the top of the leaderboards. Well it seems like there's about 4 or 5 new (i.e. guys who the casual fan has never heard of) guys in the Top 10. In this tournament's Top 9 and ties, you have Tiger, Lee Westwood, M.A. Jimenez, and Geoff Ogilvy, who are well known guys. Then you have guys who come from nowhere, like Mediate. But in the Top 20, you're going to find Mickelson, Els, Sergio, etc.

73 Top 10 finishes is ridiculous. Part of that is great golf, and part of it is lack of good competition, so again that goes to show the depth of today's game. Tiger's only played in something like 45 majors. He'd have to play every major for another 8 years to even reach that many majors played.

The technology thing is somewhat offset by the length of golf courses now.

And then the effect that Global Warming is having on weather conditions. Clearly the weather is worse now than it was then. ;)

(OOps, that's a comment for the PZ, sorry.)

You can take this either way. By saying there is "more depth" of competition means the guys Woods is playing against aren't consistent. There's always going to be someone coming in 2nd place. The 3rd ranked golfer in the world, Scott, has only won 7 times in his career of 8 years. Not very good for #3 in the world, and Scott has played in A LOT of tournaments.
IMO, better competition means that the same guys are in the top 10 consistently.

73 Top 10 finishes is ridiculous. Part of that is great golf, and part of it is lack of good competition.

 . Lack of good competition? The guys I previously mentioned are pretty much all in the hall of fame. there was no "lack of competition" during Jack's days IMO.

Tiger's only played in something like 45 majors. He'd have to play every major for another 8 years to even reach that many majors played.

exactly why I dont think tiger's knee will hold up to break that record. But you can't doubt Tiger.

The technology thing is somewhat offset by the length of golf courses now.
Agreed.

These are the records Tiger is aiming at.

  • 18 Majors by Jack Nicklaus. Tiger has 14 and is 2nd all time.
  • 82 Tour wins by Sam Snead. Tiger has 65 and is 3rd all time. Nicklaus has 73.
  • 6 Masters by Jack Nicklaus. Tiger has 4 and is tied with Arnold Palmer as 2nd all time.
  • 4 US Opens by Willie Anderson, Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones, and Jack Nicklaus. Tiger has 3 along with Hale Irwin.
  • 6 British Opens by Harry Vardon. Tiger has 3. The Modern record is Tom Watson's 5.
  • 5 PGA Championships by Walter Hagan & Jack Nicklaus. Tiger has 4.
Those are the 6 records I think he covets and will achieve. He's still very young in comparison to most golf careers and when he is on, no one is even close.
