Whats this Tiger's THIRD knee surgery on his left knee already? I wouldnt doubt that ends his career a little early. He puts so much strain on that knee during his swing.
Jack has 73 top 10 finishes in majors. Tiger would have to finish in the top ten EVERY TIME until 2019 to tie that record.
Jack has 19 second place finishes in majors. NINETEEN!
Don't get me wrong Tiger is AMAZING but the competition these days was NOT EVEN CLOSE to what Jack put up with. It doesnt matter if you don't have a choice who your competition is. Tom Watson, Arnie Palmer, Gary Player, Ben Hogan, Seve Ballesteros, Lee Trevino, Raymond Floyd.
Jacks competition was WAY MORE consistent that what Tiger goes against.
Plus, the equipment technology Tiger has over Jack.
Jack is the best.
The top end of the competition may have been better when Jack was playing, but there's no doubt there are more world-class golfers now than there were back then.
You said it yourself, those guys were consistently at the top of the leaderboards. Well it seems like there's about 4 or 5 new (i.e. guys who the casual fan has never heard of) guys in the Top 10. In this tournament's Top 9 and ties, you have Tiger, Lee Westwood, M.A. Jimenez, and Geoff Ogilvy, who are well known guys. Then you have guys who come from nowhere, like Mediate. But in the Top 20, you're going to find Mickelson, Els, Sergio, etc.
73 Top 10 finishes is ridiculous. Part of that is great golf, and part of it is lack of good competition, so again that goes to show the depth of today's game. Tiger's only played in something like 45 majors. He'd have to play every major for another 8 years to even reach that many majors played.
The technology thing is somewhat offset by the length of golf courses now.
And then the effect that Global Warming is having on weather conditions. Clearly the weather is worse now than it was then.
(OOps, that's a comment for the PZ, sorry.)
