Giants' Barber makes retirement official

By Mark Zimmerman
NFL.com

NEW YORK (Feb. 12, 2007) -- New York Giants running back Tiki Barber officially sent the NFL notice of his retirement the morning of Feb. 12. In a letter faxed to the league office at 11 a.m. ET, he put to rest any rumors or hopes that he would be returning to the league for the 2007 season.
"All along I've been firm in what I said, that this would be my final season in the NFL," Barber said. "I have had a wonderful 10-year career. I have a lot of great memories, I've made a ton of lifelong friends and I will always think of my NFL career fondly. But now it's time to move on to the next stage of my life."
Barber's retirement was a front page story back in October when the news first came out, but many people still wondered if he was truly hanging up his cleats.
"This should set aside any thoughts of a comeback," said Barber. "The next stage of my life is about to begin and I'm truly excited about it."
Barber leaves the New York Giants as the 17th all-time leading rusher in league history and holds most of the career rushing records for the Giants.
It is expected that he will begin a broadcasting career some time in the near future.

Tiki has said he wanted to do things other than sports news, he has worked with FOX doing their morning news program which has nothing to do with sports.

Me, I hate to see great players retire. Tiki caused me tons of pain over the years. But he's a great player nonetheless

I never really thought Tiki played that well against us. Sometimes he would get a 100 yard game, but I remember when we had linebackers like Dat Nygeun and Dexter Coakly that could shut him down. Darren Woodson always like to mention that Tiki had a fumbling problem when the Cowboys would play them. Now Tiki certainly did torch the Commanders on frequent occasions.

I have a lot of respect for the players that hang it up when they could keep playing. Takes a lot to know when you are done.

And that you want to keep walking.

Even when Tiki did not put up big numbers aginst Dallas he always seem to come up big when the Giants needed a play late in the game.

I guess he wanted to be on the Today Show, but NBC's studio show has way too many people on it already IMO.
--------------------------------------------------------
NEW YORK -- Tiki Barber will work for NBC next year after spending most of the 2006 NFL season entertaining bids from various networks for jobs in both news and sports.

The New York Giants' Pro Bowl running back will be introduced Tuesday at a network news conference, according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not directly involved in the contract.
Barber will work both on the "Today" show and on the network's Sunday night football show. It is unlikely he would be in the broadcast booth with the longtime team of Al Michaels and John Madden.

Barber, who had worked in the offseason at Fox, had considered offers from that network and ESPN/ABC for news-sports roles.
The 31-year-old Barber announced in October that 2006 would be his final season after 10 years with the Giants.
He finished fourth in the NFL with 1,662 yards rushing, including a career-high 234 in the season finale, a 34-28 win in Washington that got the Giants to the playoffs. For his career, he had 10,449 yards rushing and 5,182 yards receiving, joining Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk as only the third player in NFL history with 10,000 yards rushing and 5,000 receiving for their careers.

Brandon Jacobs will now be an every down back? I dunno if he can sustain that.

Looks like someone has a stake in the Dominic Rhodes sweepstakes.

I am not sure that Rhodes deserves a sweepstakes in his honor.

He is a decent back, nothing more.

He's burned us on a few occations. Good career, for a mostly classy guy. Don't blame the guy for wanting to be able to walk at the age of 50. Enjoy it Tiki, you earned it.
