Tiki torches 'idiots' for criticizing retirement decision

Tiki Barber blasted critics of his retirement decision on his Tuesday night Sirius Satellite Radio show, "The Barber Shop."

"...I will call them idiots, because they have neither spoken to me, nor any one of my teammates or any of my coaches," Barber said. "Yet all they do is criticize me for being a distraction with this retirement thing."

Barber was specifically upset at three of his critics: the New York Daily News' Gary Myers, who wrote that Barber had "created a season-long distraction" the Giants "don't need"; and ESPN's Tom Jackson, who said the decision "has distracted the team from the task at hand," and Michael Irvin.

"To me, in my head, that's quitting," Irvin said before the Giants' 36-22 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night. "That's not retiring."
Barber singled the three out during his radio show Tuesday night.

"And that includes Gary Myers," he said. "That includes Tom Jackson on ESPN. That includes the ultimate character guy, facetiously speaking of course, Michael Irvin. Please get a clue on how to be a journalist.

"Don't make blanket assumptions about it [retirement]. And obviously, as was evidenced [Monday] night, I am a huge distraction to the New York Giants," he said.

The remarks come a week after it was first learned Barber was considering retiring after this season.

"I've been talking about retirement for years now, and it has nothing to do with being physical or money or Hall of Fame," Barber said at the time. "It's all about my desires, and for me to change them would compromise my integrity and would compromise who I am as a person and what I've always stood for."

Asked whether there was added pressure to win this year because of his plans, Barber said: "The pressure's always there, it's no different just because you guys know that I'm going to retire this year.

"I'm a diverse person," Barber said. "I have a lot of interests, and at some point it's time to execute a plan that's been in place for me for about seven and a half, eight years."

Still, Barber wouldn't commit to saying his retirement was 100 percent certain.

"It's Week 6 of the NFL season, so I won't say that," he said at the time.
However, he also said there was "nothing" that would change his mind.

Now in his 10th season, the 31-year-old Barber said that he has been banged up more this season than in any previous one and that his passion for the game has waned.

Barber, who has spoken about retiring a couple times in the past year, has a myriad interests off the field. He has worked in television and has discussed possible jobs in finance and philanthropy.

"I have a lot of interests and I've never wanted to be solely defined as a football player," said Barber, who will earn $4.15 million this season. "I wasn't that way in high school, I wasn't that way in college and I won't compromise my ideals to be that way in the National Football League."

Longtime teammate Amani Toomer believes Barber is serious about quitting after this season.

"Knowing Tiki, he is not the type of guy to just say things," Toomer said. "Whatever he says, he means."

Linebacker Brandon Short thinks the talk of Barber's will not distract the team.

"Tiki is an outstanding player and I hope he stays with the Giants and plays forever, so I can watch him play and he can help us win some championships," Short said. "Right now, our focus is the task at hand and that's the 2006 season."

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I don't know, but the 100 times that ESPN mentioned Tiki's retirement during the MNF broadcast was a distraction to me.

Was it to anyone else?

There whole show was a distraction...from the game. The nfl should be embarrassed that they let espn do this to monday night football. Those idiots think their show is more important than the actual football game. All this because they think they can bring in more women viewers.

Dan Patrick said today that Tiki is a bit out of line. He said Jackson and Irvin have the wherewithal to comment being former players. He said that both of them offer perspective that the average commentator can't.

He went on to say that Tiki next year will be doing the exact same thing, commentating as a former player.

Basically reminding him which side of the bread that still needs butter.

I wish Mike and Mike would do an early "Just Shut Up Award" segment. This would definitely qualify.

Is it a distraction to the Giants? Maybe. Is he quitting? Yes, but thats his decision. He is quitting on his teammates? Yes, but does he actually owe them or anyone else something? No.

Irvin is wrong, everyone else is just speculating. If it does actually distract anyone on the team (of course it's destracting the hell out of the media) it would be a case by case basis and it's irrelavant as he has the right to retire if he wants to just like everyone else has the right to do.

Enough said. Just media outlets looking for attention. Next.

Mike & Mike took the opposite view of Irvin's comments.

Now's that's funny!:lmao: Who is Tiki to call the beloved Playmaker an "idiot". Very unprofessional from my judgement!

Tiki is a little arrogant don't you think... He wants to go into broadcasting, and now he's acting like he's the **** at broadcasting... I for one, am sick of his face being shown all over tv, talking about his retirement and integrity..

I have heard that you get your full benefits from the NFL after ten years of playing... I haven't been able to verify it, but it is Tiki's tenth year... there 401 K matching plan is not that bad either from what I can tell... I think it's 2 dollars for every dollar you contribute per year... can you imagine 45 K in an account per year...

Tiki is one weird looking dude. Kind of reminds me of the midget from Bad Santa...not sure why. Anyways, as I've stated before, I have no problem with him retiring in his prime. However, it's a bit rich for him to be getting on the high horse while at the same time refusing to commit 100% to retiring. If he has any uncertainty, than he should've kept it to himself until after the season. "Will he/won't he" questions do qualify as a distraction.

For some reason, both Barbers strike me as being insufferable types. I seem to recall Keyshawn not having much time for Ronde. God I miss Keyshawn!

Who cares. It's Irvin's job to speak his mind and offer opinion on things. It's not always going to be the popular opinion. I didn't personally agree with it either. But I can tell you 10 years from now, nobody will know much about Tiki so who cares?

They have a right to yap, but he has a right to call them idiots. I agree with Tiki in this case. How is it a distraction for a guy to say he's considering retirement, if it's true? If it is, then that's everybody else's problem: they have a responsibility to not be so easily distracted. They are after all getting paid millions of dollars. Or at least hundreds of thousands. Plenty enough to stay focused on the task at hand. And nobody but Tiki has the right to say how long he should play.
