Tim Williams = Randy Moss?

According to most scouts I've read, Tim Williams from Alabama is the best pass rusher in this draft (Myles Garrett is better overall). But Williams will likely drop to 28 because of off the field concerns. He was arrested for misdemeanor gun possession this year, and there are rumors that he has a marijuana problem. Just like passing on Randy Moss because of Michael Irvin's off the field problems, we will likely pass on Tim Williams because of Randy Gregory. But he could be the piece that puts us in the Super Bowl, just like Randy Moss could have been. He likely would be off my board. But who know's if he's off Jerry & Stephen's.

They have to perform their due diligence to investigate him. If the 1 time gun issue is the only problem, I would not be too worried. Most players have smoked weed. If he has not failed a drug test, then I would not be too worried about it.

Michael Irvin's problems caused the Cowboys not to draft Randy Moss.

Randy Gregory's problems will likely cause them to not draft Tim WIlliams or some other player that will be really good and not fail drug tests.

It comes down to the interviews, their relationship with Saban, and what he does in a little plastic cup at the combine. If he's clean at the combine I suspect he's a first round player, if he's not I bet he slides like Gregory did.

Why not pick the better player in Ryan Anderson? When you watch them both, Anderson almost always has a half second jump on Williams giving him a yard or more advantage on rushing the passer. In the clips below, Anderson is #22 and Williams is #56 -- they play opposite ends.

Just look at this jump on the snap:

He's so quick. Basically 2 yards down the field when the rest of the defensive line (who has two likely first round picks on it) is still in their stance.

Anderson also sheds blockers like a pro:

Some stats:

Sacks + TFL:
Anderson - 27
Williams - 25

Total Tackles:
Anderson - 61
Williams - 31

Forced Fumbles:
Anderson - 4
Williams - 2

INTs:
Anderson - 1
Williams - 0

Best I can guess is that people think Williams is better because he's 2 inches taller. But it can't be because of play on the field. They're both very good and both would be first round picks in most drafts outside of 2017, but to me Anderson is just a better player.

I think Williams has far higher upside, athletically. It will be shown at the combine. Scouts pre-season and after-season, have called Williams the best rusher in college football not named Myles Garrett.

it's about upside and NFL projection. Williams is taller, faster, and more athletic. Anderson may be the better college football player; Williams will be a better pro, if he stays out of trouble. Plus, Williams was a part-time player in Alabama's scheme. In fact, it is amazing the numbers Williams put up in limited playing time.

We'll see I guess. I doubt Williams puts up much better numbers at the combine. And, if we're saying Williams is a better passrusher or player, I guess I can't refute your point about potential, because it certainly wasn't the case in games. But anyone can slap "potential" onto a player and claim that makes him better. Some people still think Wentz has more "potential" than Dak, for example.

Either Takk McKinley or Tim Williams will be there at 28. Have to pick the one available. But Cowboys cannot be satisfied with ONE edge rusher in upcoming draft, going have to pick 2 minimum, maybe even 4.

Ryan Anderson, Harris, Lawson, Watt, Willis, Kpassagnon, Basham, Smoot, Phillips, Fields, Hendricksen, Davis, Price, Carraway, etc. are all considerations after the first round.

I hear ya. I think Anderson is a great football player. Just not sure how his game translates to NFL. He is 6'2" and only 31 3/4" arms. Here's his draft profile bottom line from NFL.com

BOTTOM LINE
Well-schooled with a high football IQ and a history as a winner. His disciplined, assignment-based approach to the game should resonate with defensive coordinators. Lack of length and average athletic traits could put a cap on his draft stock, but he should be a safe pick and a long-time starter as an outside linebacker.

Here's Anderson's bottom line:

BOTTOM LINE
Alabama has the type of talent and scheme on defense that can make life much easier for everyone along the front seven, but Williams has explosiveness and pass-rush talent to create his own havoc as a pass rusher regardless of what is around him. Scouts say he is lighter than his listed weight and needs to prove he can play with increased toughness in order to reach his potential. Williams' career might be as a pass-rush specialist, but he's talented enough at that endeavor to become a dangerous rush linebacker in the NFL.

I have a general rule against reading draft analysis of players. They're basically worthless, unless it's about mental/psychological aspects which you can't see in games.

Lol 4 pass rushers? You know we only bring max 10 guys on game day, right?

I'd draft him round 2. He may play up to a first rounder but I don't think teams are fighting to draft him like that.

My belief is that someone from that Alabama defense will play for Dallas next season. My gut says Ryan Anderson.

He has to pass his drug test at the combine to even be a thought. Randy Gregory's problem wasn't just that he smoked weed a lot. His problem was that he came into the league in the protocol. As long as you aren't in the protocol, you take a drug test once a year with warning of when it is. It's also around the same exact time every year.

I've heard estimates from former players that say upwards of 70-80% of players smoke weed habitually. The majority of them aren't dumb enough to fail a test they know is coming.

True. but if he is smart enough to not get caught like most then he won't be at our pick. Doubt he would even be in range for 4 or 5 spot trade up.

We had zero edge rushers last season, so the more the better. Mayowa, Lawrence, etc. need to all be pushed. Gregory and Tapper cannot be counted on in 2017.

Still sounds irresponsible to me. Honda like we'd probably be cutting some good players at other positions just to carry these added DEs
