Time for Garrett to show some guts

The problem with trick plays is they only work if you have something else working for you in spades.

They are deception plays that take advantage of the repetitive and ingrained tendencies teams have. All of the other side has to bite on the trick play. If one sniffs it out it could be a disaster.

See Randall Williams onside kick return for 37 yards against the Eagles.

If you want to make an onside kick really work I think you need some elements in place.

1. You need the lead. The other team has to feel the imperative of doing something with the ball. They have to believe you are content with a standard play - kicking it deep.
2. Your kicker has to have set up the onside with returnable kicks prior to the onside. If he has been booting it out of the end zone regularly the front line is not all going to buy that there is going to be a kick return. They may not all run back quickly to set up a return if there has been no prior indication that a return is possible or imminent. Remember you only need one player to be lazy, hang around the front line and not sprint to set up a kick return to ruin your plans.
3. There has to be either a ridiculous amount of surprise or fatigue. One way or another the mental edge for the return men has to be compromised and they are NOT thinking about their immediate principle job, but the next step. For the front line they are not suppose to release on kick return until the ball is over their heads.

Trick plays are fun and exciting, but there is a lot of strategy to setting them up.

Flea flickers are the same thing. If you want them to work you have to be gashing the hell out of the defence on runs for big yardage. Lineman, LBs and secondary. If even one doesn't bite it may not work. Murray would have to spin off 10 plus runs for 10 to 15 yards before I can see a flea flicker being set up well to work against a defence.

But anything can happen so even desperation trick plays can work - sometimes. Most work because they are strategically set up.

Today is the perfect day for Red to pull out a trick play or two against a disciple of Parcell who is not afraid to do so himself.
I cannot recall the last time Red tried a surprise onside kick, reverse pass etc. Since we are in a game that most don't believe we can win then it's time to try to CREATE some big plays for ourselves. What else has he got to lose?

The play I like to see happen is a flanker sweep to the right to Harris (he's done this) but a option pass down the field to ...... Escobar! If TE is double covered then just make it a sweep or else let Escobar and his 6'6 frame play jump ball.

What would be your play?

disciple of Parcells? since when? just because Parcells hired him when he was used as the scape goat by the giants coach before coughlin. so since Jerry hired him to be the OC here for Parcells he then becomes a parcells disciple? Plus Parcells would not let him call plays without his approval of the play, that is one of the main reasons he wanted to get away from Parcells

I don't know, I would rather punch them in the mouth than try to be cute, To much can go wrong being cute. Murray needs to hold on to the ball.
I'd be scared to death to see him try and pitch it back to Romo.

you still punch them in the mouth....let ol'Rob Ryan spaz out trying to stop the run and then take your shot... it would embarrass Rob Ryan at ATT Stadium and on National TV.....I can see Rob Ryan throwing his clip board and Sean Peyton letting out some F-Bombs.....punch them in the mouth and then embarrass them......But we all no that is not Garretts style....I will be happy if the Garrett Cowboys can a least win a prime time game for a change

Garret showed a lot of guts last week staying with the run game when the team was down 21 points.

Starting at 5:30 PM they need to set the tone by introducing our road graders to the Saints. Ground and pound until they prove they can stop it. Mix in some PA and some fake pass plays to keep the defense guessing.

With the way the running game going the way it has, a flea-flicker would likely have a real chance to be effective. Plus, it would be Romo throwing the ball, which is who I would want throwing it.

I understand and I don't disagree. Pound the ball and pound it some more. However, you wouldn't run the flea flicker until you have beat them up with the run game for a good long while. IOW, go ahead and punch them in the mouth and then once thy're tired, give them a haymaker (FFlicker).

See Matt Stafford play against Cowboys last year, where he quick snapped and stretched the ball in the endzone. Does that count?

I would have thought that was more Stafford's call but I don't know.

It was a quick decision in hurry up mode so I don't know if I would consider it the same as true trick play but rather a quick, smart decision based on the immediate circumstance.

Yep ... trick plays, that's what we're lacking.

How about we just stick with the game plan? No mistakes. No Romo-mania. Play freakin' football.

I'd like to see some trick plays on Defense, like INT's, fumble recovery's, sacks, etc. We need these to win...

Rob Ryan is defensive coordinator. We'll catch him trying to do too much a couple times.

Question

Would it still show guts if he calls a trick play, a player blows an assignment, and it leads to a costly turnover and thereby losing us the game?

I'd wager most would call him an idiot at that point. It's a fine line.

The Steelers have shown lots of guts today by running a few different trick plays and they are still struggling to put away a bad Bucs team at home.

Did the Browns show guts with that bush league trick play with Manziel?

I don't usually agree with you, but on this I do agree. All those gutsy trick plays resulted in a loss for the Steelers.

Just execute your game plan and throw the trick plays in the garbage.
