The best two players on this team are an ongoing riddle wrapped in a puzzle lost in an enigma.
For so long, Tony Romo and Dez Bryant have been the Alpha and Omega of all Cowboys hopes. When both are upright and spry, they bleed throughout the roster, and put Dallas in elite conversations. They hide warts and stop stutters. They make everything seem OK on Sunday.
But upright and spry might as well be bingo numbers twirling in the big wheel lately. Getting these two simultaneously healthy and right has been the missing variable for too long. The Cowboys have been flailing hopelessly in the dark without them.
With Romo, it's been unavoidable. Through no fault of his own, the franchise has forever clung desperately by the threadiest of threads, relying on Romo for everything week in and week out. His back and clavicle health have carried the weight of the franchise for months now. Before that, it was a mixture of 95 percent brilliance with 5 percent Farvrian flings that sourly ended seasons marred by embarrassingly inept defensive teams. Mercifully, it looks like his eventual end will coincide with the completion of Dak Prescott's development, so limbo no more at QB soon.
Dez' career has been all over the place. Plays genius, acts the fool, he's hurt, he's not hurt, he's hurt, he's not hurt. He bought a monkey, he gave it away, he's in a money dispute with a random community leader, he settles, he dominates, he disappears, he's here at the facility, nobody knows where he is, he's happy and positive, he's screaming at Rich Dalrymple. It's got to be a 24-hour rollercoaster ride for the coaches with Dez. But when he's right, he's like the toughest mustang in the herd to corral for opponents.
Injuries are starting to mount for Dez, too, and that's not good news for a wide receiver. The end of Romo's career could very well coincide with the end of Dez', or at least the effective part of Dez as he appears to be aging fast. Witten, as well. Soon enough, this will be the Dak and Zeke Estravaganza, mixed with the next big-name receiver that comes through.
In the meantime, I'd love to see another run with Romo and Dez, together, doing that thing they do, with Witten aboard, too.
I don't want to see it end like this for them.
