The best two players on this team are an ongoing riddle wrapped in a puzzle lost in an enigma.

For so long, Tony Romo and Dez Bryant have been the Alpha and Omega of all Cowboys hopes. When both are upright and spry, they bleed throughout the roster, and put Dallas in elite conversations. They hide warts and stop stutters. They make everything seem OK on Sunday.

But upright and spry might as well be bingo numbers twirling in the big wheel lately. Getting these two simultaneously healthy and right has been the missing variable for too long. The Cowboys have been flailing hopelessly in the dark without them.

With Romo, it's been unavoidable. Through no fault of his own, the franchise has forever clung desperately by the threadiest of threads, relying on Romo for everything week in and week out. His back and clavicle health have carried the weight of the franchise for months now. Before that, it was a mixture of 95 percent brilliance with 5 percent Farvrian flings that sourly ended seasons marred by embarrassingly inept defensive teams. Mercifully, it looks like his eventual end will coincide with the completion of Dak Prescott's development, so limbo no more at QB soon.

Dez' career has been all over the place. Plays genius, acts the fool, he's hurt, he's not hurt, he's hurt, he's not hurt. He bought a monkey, he gave it away, he's in a money dispute with a random community leader, he settles, he dominates, he disappears, he's here at the facility, nobody knows where he is, he's happy and positive, he's screaming at Rich Dalrymple. It's got to be a 24-hour rollercoaster ride for the coaches with Dez. But when he's right, he's like the toughest mustang in the herd to corral for opponents.

Injuries are starting to mount for Dez, too, and that's not good news for a wide receiver. The end of Romo's career could very well coincide with the end of Dez', or at least the effective part of Dez as he appears to be aging fast. Witten, as well. Soon enough, this will be the Dak and Zeke Estravaganza, mixed with the next big-name receiver that comes through.

In the meantime, I'd love to see another run with Romo and Dez, together, doing that thing they do, with Witten aboard, too.

I don't want to see it end like this for them.

I'm not worried about Dez due to his age. He's had some freak injuries. Romo on the other hand......I have no idea what to think. The tackle that has him injured right now is common contact you can expect just about every game in the NFL.

I'm a bit sad that Romo's window opportunity to get himself into the HOF is closing. Basically he has to win the Superbowl year OR it's not going to happen -- based on his inability to stay healthy.

I really think Romo was a HOF 'calibre' player who has had more than his fair share of bad luck.

Starting to assume the same for Dez. Assuming he misses 3-4 games (hopefully I'm wrong) he'll end up under a 1000 yards receiving for the 4th time in his 7 year career. The high # of TDs per game is great, but it won't be enough to get into the HOF at this rate.

I know it's foolish for me to be worrying about HOF, however, I'm always a bit mindful of it with top Cowboys players.

Time has sprinted. Draft a receiver or get one in free agency, Dez can't be depended on!

We're good at quarterback so no worries there

Whoever takes over for Romo--and it looks like almost certainly it's Dak--will be walking into a very good situation. Young dominant line and young stud RB.
But they will need better WRs if Dez were to fade away.
Sterling Shepard would have looked good in Dallas.

As with almost all of Dez and Tony's years together, the team still has some work to do on defense.
But by getting a QB on the cheap, they should be able to build it faster.

Dez reliable or not isn't going anywhere. If we draft a receiver it's to replace low IQ Terrance Williams and they will team with Dez.

Thank you erod for a fair and very eloquent assessment of our current situation. And also giving Dez and Romo their due (your second to last, short paragraph, in particular). Kudos, brother.

I think Romo is here till the end of 2017 season then will be gone. Very unlikely he will get a SB...I don't even think he can get to an NFCC game with this team. Dez will be here till the end of his contract....JJ loves him...loyalty will win out over injuries and demeanor. We'll see if Dak can compete for a SB when it's his turn...I have serious doubts they can build a team around him.

Dak will suffer the same career fate as Romo unless the defense is significantly improved. If Dak is our man, some part of me would like to see Romo traded to Denver or some other team with a real defense and given a legit chance at the Super Bowl.

I actually think it is pretty rare to be sitting on the ground and have someone land on your shoulder with all their weight. That was a very odd position and hit!

JJ seemed pretty fond of TO as well even though BP did not seem to care much for him.

I think it was rare...almost freakishly rare.

It would be like a 230 lb man sitting on an elevated chair and having it pulled out from under him, AND just as he was falling , another 240 lb man jumps on his shoulders....then they land squarely on the guy' on the bottom's tail bone.
Compressional fractures are very unusual in the NFL.

You're at risk for that to happen every game though especially the way Romo ran out of that pocket.

I really wonder if all those years of playing golf has wrecked havoc on his back, making him susceptible to injury.

It was actually a very uncommon tackle. Romo was going into a slide right when someone landed on him and bent him over, increasing the pressure/impact on his vertebrate. Every medical opinion I've read says that the injury is cause by specifically that mechanism and that, unless he has some bone disease, could happen to anyone.

Huh?

He's right. Pro golfers often suffer from back issues because of the repeated twisting and torque they put on their back. Tiger Woods, Fred Couples, Lee Trevino, Greg Norman.....it's the number one injury in golf.

Tony has played a ton of golf, and I have no doubt it compromised it to some degree.

Right, but I specifically stated broken back. Are those golfers pulling ligaments/muscles or are they breaking vertebrae?

Can you then expound on how playing golf leads to a broken back? I asked Joe, but since you jumped in I'm all ears.
