Love the guy and love what the 1st ballot HOFer has meant to the Cowboys. He is going to get full salary for not playing this year. Sadly, his body is not holding up for him to play 16 games in the NFL.

Time to send him off with a hero's farewell and his guaranteed money.
Since we are paying him for this year anyway ,
Why not keep him?
If by some miracle he can play and we make the playoffs
He might contribute.
I understand this is highly doubtful, but there is no
Downside I can see,?

When you look at his availability the past 3 seasons, it's an easy decision. He is not a 20-something player who will have a better success rate with recovery.

No, he's a 31 in a league where offensive lineman are playing into their late 30s. He could possibly have 4-5 more seasons in him. As I said, I'm okay with keeping him around because he's not hurting our cap and the chance of having him for 13 or more games next season is too valuable especially when we don't have an option to come in and replace him. If we find his replacement, then sure, send him packing. Until then, there is no downside to keeping him.

He's going to likely go on IR, which saves a roster spot anyway.

Is he first ballot HOF, I’m not so sure.

All-decade player, leader of the best offensive line group of the 2010s, multiple all-pros. etc.

He certainly has a better case than most offensive lineman outside of Joe Thomas and Zack Martin (when he hangs it up)

8 time pro bowler and he's only 31. Someone else is gonna get a good tackle to help get wins if we do away with him. They messed up when they cut Collins.

Should actually keep him for the rest of his contract. Hes making 8 mill next year and 4 in the final year. Thats peanuts, I don't even care if he plays half the season. Armstrong just got 5+mill a season to be a part time DE.

For him to be eligible to return this season, he would have to be on the roster for one day- which means cutting a player to make room for him. Maybe that player gets claimed by another team, maybe not. The Cowboys have some interesting depth, especially on the D-Line, but also in the secondary. Many respondents in this thread are in favor of keeping him. I wonder what player they would cut to make room for him?

Just wait and let him retire on his own terms. Obviously, Dallas thinks they have the long-term solution to the position in Tyler Smith, so there's no hurry with Tyron. He'll go on IR after making the initial roster, and he'll probably stay on it all year, so it's not like he'll take up a roster spot other than for the first day, when we'll cut some vet like Goodwin, Maher, McQuaide for a day.

Obviously, if Tyler works out and Tyron wants to come back next year, we'll have to part ways, but hopefully by the time this season is up, he'll see that it's time to call it quits.
No disrespect intended to you, but the whole idea of letting a player go out “on his own terms” in the salary cap/roster limited era is a very competitively unhealthy way to view this situation. Either he is worthy of his salary and his roster spot or he is not.

People complain about winning nothing for the last 26 years or so and counting—and yet espouse a mindset like this. Either you want to win—-and do all you can to win—or you don’t and you do things like overpay Witten and keep his past his usefulness. But make no mistake about it, sentimental feel good things get in the way of winning a Super Bowl.

They really need to decide if they think Tyron can play this year or not. If not, save the roster spot for someone who can.

Don't think we get anything for cutting him this year, so the salary cap doesn't matter, whether he spends the whole season on IR or not. I'd let him spend the year on IR. Who knows? If he actually does get healthy, we might need him come the playoffs. Injury is part of the game, so it could happen to someone else.

When I say go out on his own terms, I'm only talking about this season. Next season, we save almost $10 million by cutting him.

I'm not for not considering the cap on whether to keep him, but we make no space by cutting him and he doesn't take up a roster spot, so it's not about sentimentality. There's just no reason to cut him now. To me, cutting a player just to cut a player is an unhealthy way to view the situation.

No need to cut him. When he's able to play he's worth the money. Keep him, find his replacement.

The only roster spot he's going to take up is on the initial 53 before immediately being put on IR. You have low-cost vets you can leave off the roster and bring back, like Goodwin, Maher and McQaide, to accomplish that. We've done that before, and I expect to do it again. There may be some slight risk of some team swooping in, but these are generally handshake deals that may come with some slight guarantees to sweeten the pot for those vets.

But but but … he’ll be back for the playoffs. Lol

Yep, it’s definitely time. But Jethro prob won’t until his contract expires. Unless Tyler does well replacing him.

And I return to, he's not breaking the bank. So let's say next year we get him for 13 games on his current contract, that's still far more valuable than releasing him and replacing him with some JAG.

I'm not against moving on from Smith if we have his replacement ready, but we don't really need to contemplate this right now because he is on a friendly contract. Great LTs don't grow on trees.
12 million is a chunk of money. Can sign a top flight guard or center for that in FA

Pretty solid post and reasoning. Plus, look at the bright side now he gets a year off to heal up. This guy has had the crap kicked out of him for how many years in a row? Sure he gives as good as he gets but overall....a year off will do his body good. I doubt he makes it back even IF we do get into the playoffs. He's got a year to heal up and go from there.
