Demarco. End of story. 1st down was a guaranteed 5 yards.

Its called tape. Teams have these called "film", that are actually recordings of what you did in games the year before. They use this "film", or recording, to capitalize on tendencies you show in particular down and distance scenarios, especially a year after your brand new coordinator has a successful season.

Crazy, I know.

First down - RUN
9.9 times out of 10, 1st down is a run play. Too easy. So elementary. How often have we converted a 1st down pass on 1st down this year? I best you can count the occasions on one hand.
In the first half of games, the Cowboys called 91 pass plays and 116 running plays on first down. That's 56% run.

Over entire games, it was 53% run.

I have no idea why people think we ran on first down all the time this year.

DeMarco gained 5 or more yards on 39% of his first down runs last year.

And that was the 2014 DeMarco. Yeah, Philly wasn't a fit for him, but I'm pretty sure he would not have been anywhere close to the same guy even had he stayed.

What's more disturbing is teams usually have "quality control" people that scout their own offense and defense in an attempt to make sure they aren't too predictable. I could be wrong, but I think assistant receivers coach Keith O'Quinn has that task with the Cowboys. And they're still predictable.

What disturbs me is the way we can't play action bootleg and either the qb walk in or throw to a wide open receiver.

Nobody seemed to mind the 1st down runs last season.

Can you figure out the difference in this year over year comparison? Could it be the running back? Yes, I believe it could.

Actually, I think it has more to do with the fact that our 3rd down conversion percentage was about 12 points higher last year than this year. Last year, on first down runs, we averaged 6.33 yards. This year, 6.24. Not that much difference. Murray had so many yards because he so many carries. His YPC was only slightly higher than McFadden's has been. And he had the benefit of a stronger passing game.

I've noticed that when Dallas lines up to kick a FG, they almost always kick a FG.

When Wilcox appears on TV running down a play, 99% chance he takes a bad angle and miss a tackle for a long gain.

Followed by furious clapping from JG and a butt slapping when Wicox gets off the field.

Love the revisionists getting schooled in this thread, quality stuff!

my pet peeve tip off play: incomplete pass on first down means a run up the middle on second down,,, usually for a measly 2-3 yards. To be fair though, i think other teams follow the same strategy,,, its like the possibility of being 3rd and 10 is to be avoided at all cost even though theres a 90% chance you'll end up 3rd and 8 anyway.

Thanks for pulling up the data.

Hilarious that it was simply completely ignored. Confirmation bias is a strong bias, apparently.

Show me the data that suggests the running game was worse on its own (instead of as a DIRECT result of the star QB being out). I personally don't buy it.

That stat is skewed because at the end of the half or end of the games, teams mostly pass on all downs when they are losing or tied.

Before last game, we ran 218 run plays on first down and 168 pass. That looks somewhat even except when you check out how much of that pass plays on first down was at end of the half or games.

We ran 16 run plays on first down and 51 pass plays at the end of the half and end of games. That means all other times we ran 202 times on first down and passed 117 times.

That's 64% that we run on first down during normal game situations.

The league average is about 52%.
