The submersible usually carries a pilot, three paying guests, and what the company calls a "content expert".

The trip sets sail from St John's in Newfoundland, which is around 370 miles (600km) from the wreckage site. Each full dive to the wreck, including the descent and ascent, reportedly takes around eight hours.

The OceanGate website lists three submersibles it owns, and only the Titan is capable of diving deep enough to reach the Titanic wreckage.

The vessel weighs 10,432 kg (23,000 lbs) and, according to the website, can reach depths of up to 4,000m and has 96 hours of life support available for a crew of five.

A vessel called the Polar Prince, which is used to transport submersibles to the wreckage site, was involved in the expedition, its owner told the BBC.

David Pogue, a CBS reporter who travelled in the Titan submersible last year, told the BBC about the issues that both the submersible crew and the land crew are likely to be experiencing, saying that there is currently "no way" to communicate with the vessel as neither GPS nor radio "work under water".

"When the support ship is directly over the sub, they can send short text messages back and forth. Clearly those are no longer getting a response," Mr Pogue said.

He added that because the passengers are sealed inside the vessel by bolts applied from the outside, "there's no way to escape, even if you rise to the surface by yourself. You cannot get out of the sub without a crew on the outside letting you out."

Well, now I have a new nightmare. Why would you make it impossible to escape??? I realize they don't want people panicking and killing everyone while they're underwater, but they should have some type of system the pilot can access, possibly with a keypad.

$250k per person for the 9 day trip. Sub made out of Carbon Fibre. One of the passengers also partook in one of Bezos rocket launches.

Here's my guess about what's going on. They are fine. There's a billionaire aboard, and the more attention this gets, the more people will want to go on this trip, once they are "rescued." Billionaire wants to invest in the business. This is his way of promoting it .

We shall see.

If they survive, this will be a movie... it's big. If they survive, this is the best thing that could have happened to the business. If not, the worst. Honestly, though, the more I think about, the more I think there was a leak. There's been no response, and no surfacing. The only other scenario is they get snagged, or netted.

This is an interesting read about the structural design.

"Paul Henri Nargeole, the French diver known as “Mr Titanic”, is feared to be aboard, according to the French newspaper Le Figaro.

Le Figaro said that while it had “no confirmation” Mr Nargeole was in the submersible, the 73-year-old had confided some concerns about the expedition to his relatives before his departure.

Mr Nargeole reportedly said he “did not trust this new composite material submarine with a 60cm porthole, but I’ll go anyway for the beauty of the expedition”."

One expert said it could be a sword fish, which I didn't believe until I looked up this.

The Titanic is 13K feet deep, that submersible probably imploded due to a structural fail.

The submersible was operated by OceanGate Expeditions.

David Concannon, an adviser to OceanGate, said the submersible had a 96-hour oxygen supply starting at roughly 6 a.m. Sunday. In an email to The Associated Press, Concannon said he was supposed to be on the dive but could not go due to another client matter. He said officials were working to get a remotely operated vehicle that can reach a depth of 6,000 meters (about 20,000 feet) to the site as soon as possible.

Man, if even by the small and unlikely chance they are still alive at the bottom of the ocean, if they lost power it would be completely pitch black down there. They’re also likely freezing at those depths. Absolutely horrid way to die.
