There are countless times in the NFL where the conservative approach also loses games for teams. But people don’t focus on that as much.

It’s a difference in approach to the game. It’s a difference in philosophy. But his decisions are not stupid.

The rules have changed over the decades.

Offense has more advantages within the rules than they used to. Roughing the passer, defensive holding and illegal contact, defenseless receiver, etc.

All the changes in the NFL have increased scoring and offensive efficiency.

This means that the importance of possessing the ball has gone up. Since the importance of possessing the ball has increased, it makes more sense to go for it, more often than it used to. Rather than punt and play defense.

Like I said. His decisions aren’t stupid. You may disagree with the philosophy based on “your gut” but that doesn’t mean being more aggressive is stupid or detrimental to the teams chances to win more games.

That was not even a gamble by the Lions. Going for it on 4th and inches was absolutely the right call. Pick up the 1st down and then you can run out the clock for a final FG attempt. Even if you didn't convert, you would have to get a stop which is the same as what you would have needed even you kicked the FG on 4th down instead of going for it.

But there is also something to be said for the “we are going to win this game right now” mentality.

They built one of the best OL’s in the league and have one of the best RB tandems in the league. Saying “we are going to ram the ball down your throats, and win the game right here right now.” And we aren’t even going to give you a chance to get back on offense.

It’s hyper aggressive but it’s not stupid.

Yep, agree. I’m not 100% certain, but I wonder if these analytics included probability that the other team scores (even a touchdown) if you don’t convert the first down from your own 25-30 yard line. And how does that increase the probability that you lose the game. Just a reckless way to play the game IMO.

1. When the team fails to execute and plays aren’t successful yes it increases the chance of losing.

2. Had the team executed and gotten conversions the plays it would have increased their chances of winning those games.

3. You fail to bring up the numerous examples of how his aggressive decisions HELPED the Lions even get to the NFC championship game last year.

4. You ignore all the times being conservative costs teams games all across the league.

Prime example: You criticize his decisions in the game last night. When the Lions went 4/5 on 4th down attempts and WON the game.


So like I said. You may prefer a more conservative approach to the game. But it doesn’t make the aggressive approach stupid. It’s not stupid. It works slightly more often than the conservative approach does.

It was stupid at that time and almost paid the price with Goff tripping and falling. if Goff would have had to eat the ball when he fell and gave the Packers the ball back and they scored, I am sure you would be screaming that your Meathead coach should have kicked the gimme field goal. it was also a meathead stupid decision to go for it at 4th and one from their 30. His decisions will cost the Lions down the road. The coach from San Diego got run out of town for making those same stupid decisions. The problem for him was he did not have a team that could bail out his "look how smart I am" decisions. The talent and his coordinators keep bailing him out.

Btw, considering how smart you are. I’m surprised you don’t know that playing conservative ALSO requires the team and players to execute to still win the game. Because ya know, when you punt. You are then leaning on the defense to get a stop.

Your premise is flawed. Winning football games requires the players on the field to execute and succeed. No matter what the coaches decision is. It’s not like a coach making a conservative choice just absolves the players from actually having to play.

I mean that makes it even more of a point to go for it as often as you can. Detroit's defense is pretty thin right now and can easily be scored on as GB showed. Eagles won't have any issues moving the ball and scoring on Detroit. Campbell is who he is and will never change. Good for him. They will need a lot of scores against the Eagles and even other teams like Minnesota and Green Bay will be able to score. Tampa can put up points. Detroit needs to keep the ball and score.

I support coaches who go for it on 4th down when it isn't much to get, all over the field. I remember Dallas going for it on 4th and short inside their own 25 on a Thanksgiving game. Punting is for losers, especially when your defense isn't good.
