Now that Barber has to limit his style of play, by not using stiff-arms to the helmet. I'm sure he will simply resort to his helmet to helmet approach...................

I think most players will prefer the stiff-arm tactic. What do you think?:laugh1:

Is there a new rule?

No the officials will be simply paying more attention to the old rule of "No stiff-arms to the face".

Of course when interviewed, Barber jokingly commented "What about the throat"

Gotta love The Barbarian. :yourock:

Here is the article....................

By CHAREAN WILLIAMS

IRVING -- It is being called the "Marion Barber Rule", but its namesake doesn’t know anything about it.

“What’s that? What happened?” Barber asked.

Offensive players using stiff arms to the face of defenders always was against the rules, but officials rarely called it. After watching Barber turn the stiff arm into “a weapon” as one member of the NFL’s competition committee put it, the rule has become a point of emphasis for this season.

Officials have been told to throw a flag when an offensive player grabs onto or twists the facemask of a defender -- a 15-yard facemask penalty -- or when he violently shoves a defender aside with a stiff arm to the face -- a 15-yard hands-to-the-face penalty.

“Then, I’m going to use the elbow,” Barber said, jokingly, before adding, “I didn’t even know. I’m going to have to read up on it. So you can’t stiff arm at all? What about the throat?”
Barber will get his chance to ask officials about the rule during training camp. The Cowboys report to training camp July 24 in Oxnard, Calif. Every NFL team meets with officials before the season to go over any new rules and points of emphasis.

:laugh2: reporter: "hey Marion, what are your hobbies?"

Barber " anything that involves pain and violence" "stuff like that ya know?"

the whole point of the stiff arm is to knock the defender's equilibrium off

it's going to be worthless now w/ this panzification

LOL! Not worried. But this is TOTAL BULL. This is football. Its about hitting. RB are moving targets. Let them do what they got to do to fend of guys trying to end them.

It's funny, when Walter Payton stiff-armed someone, it was called a "weapon" but he was given props for it. When Barber does it they call it a "weapon" but they make a rule (or decide to more strictly enforce an existing one) because of it.

We need fewer rules, not more. :bang2: :bang2: :bang2: :bang2: :bang2:

It's funny how the committee always feels the need to change the rules because a Cowboy player has perfected something that had always been allowed. Yet the Broncos chop blocked there way to a Super Bowl, still do to this day and no one has said a peep.

I remember seeing Emmitt called for a facemask while using a stiff arm. I also remember him breaking his hand while using one on a long TD run vs Minnesota I think.

Anyway, while I love Barber's stiff arm, I've often cringed in anticipation of a pentalty call while he was throwing what sometimes could be called a punch. I really appreciate his fire when he runs but knew it was only a matter of time until the league realized what he was doing. A stiff arm, in my opinion, was designed to keep a defensive player at arms length and not as a weapon to "throw off a player's equilibrium".

no, its no stiff arm to face, but it says nothing about using force by stiff arm to shoulder pads, chest, or even other parts of helmet for that matter....

stiff arm to face is banned, but that doesn't mean the stiff arm is banned... keep using it MBIII....

What has prompted this rule change? Were there an inordinate amount of facial injuries that I missed as a result of Barber's "stiff arm"? A massive increase of concussions as a direct result of him slapping the side of someones football helmet?

I can understand the need for the horse collar rule, it's a broken leg waiting to happen, but this rule change or emphasis.. I don't get.

This sucks, like, if breaks for a first down, pushes the side of a players helmet that has it poitiung towords him, and he falls to the turf will it be called? Can it be reviewed? A blanket 15 yards seems excessive.

I guess my main problem with it is, if nobody got hurt from him doing it why change it? They are now making rules in case players may get hurt. It's time to start looking out for padded endzones in case players come down on thoer ankles to hard from crossbar dunks.

Oh the huge manity.
