Actually, the "warm muscles" explanation is only half right. The other half is compression. Those tights are called compression pants. They also make compression shirts and shorts. By keeping a wrap on the muscle, you also reduce the chance of a pull. That's part of the reason why Under Armour shirts are so tight. I play inline hockey and wear a compression shirt and shorts under my gear.

I thought that part of their program was that everyone had to earn the right to wear the star. Maybe they make exception for FA pickups ?

To add to stasheroo's comment, those are the practice jerseys. I'm sure they're used throughout the year during practices, OTAs, and camps, etc.

Also: only the rooks have to earn stars on the helmets. The first time he prolly made everyone earn the star was when he first arrived in Dallas. Since then, only the rooks have to do it. Vets and FA pickups don't have to earn stars.
