We have heard the mantra over and over again, DC's say they need to make offense's one dimensional and their #1 priority is to stop the run. If that is achieved, it allows defensive lineman to pin their ears back and rush the QB. It allows DC's the ability to use exotic rush packages. The Cowboy Defense is rarely in these situations due to their inability to stop the run on the early downs. It makes it far more difficult to get off the field, when they have to defend the run/pass on third and short yardage.

The focus of the rebuilding needs to start up the middle:

-Need to strengthen the DT position to protect the Linebackers
-Need instinctive linebackers who can see plays before they are happening
-Need a high level, tackling safety who can make plays at or behind the line of scrimmage

yes, it starts with stopping the run..... giving up 174 yards per game is totally unacceptable....teams will eat you up that way all day....

We definitely need to emphasize quality players on the defensive side of the ball. We need a DT that can consistently take on two blockers.

Stopping the run has been a problem for this defense because. Jaylon is having trouble playing MLB and stopping the run. He isn’t a sure tackler. He’s not even a okay one.

Fix the DT spots, yes both 1 and 3 and the linebackers issues will be fixed. We still need corners and safety.

I agree, build this inside out. I'll take a patch job group of DBs of we can invest in the front 7.

Id probably roll the dice on jaylon getting better. You need 3 backers, and you have none right now who you can count on to be starters and play 16 games. Had to find 3 in the offseason. Maybe LVE can stay healthy, and Jaylon will get better with actual DTs. Who knows.

If this team doesn't spend either a high draft pick or significant FA acquisition on a dt 2021 will be a repeat of 2020. Im a fan of gallimore, hill looked improved, but neither should be counted on at this point. Plus that's a position where if you dont have depth you better have an absolute monster like an aaron donald or fletcher cox to man the middle.

If you can run the ball, you can do anything you want on offense.

And, if you're great at STOPPING the run, it forces teams to pass all day, which should help your pass rush (if you're creative enough). Sadly, teams are beating Dallas without having to even throw for 200 YPG

You cant have an organizational philosophy of not valuing DT for about a decade, decide that's wrong, sign two guys that have nothing left, and have it fixed.

This defense seems to thrive on what happens up front in the middle and they just dont have the horses.

IMO if they go back to a standard 43, they can fix this with one dramatically good off season.

If they insist on building into Nolans 34, it's going to set us back a very long ways.

That's the part that concerns me the most.

Always spent $$$ on the OL...NEVER spent it on the DL. Other than QB, these are the 2 most important areas of a team. Strong walls can protect the weak
I'm not sure thats true, the cowboys have just used resources on the wrong players. DLAW and crawford both got paid. High picks on hill, gallimore, taco, gregory, etc.

While I still believe the QB is the most important position, this FO cannot ignore the DL any longer.

Games are still won in the trenches.

But, Dallas also has to get luckier on picking players for those positions. Or signing.

The pass defense is far worse.

While this is true Future, teams have been averaging 194.5 YPG passing against the team the last 4 weeks...but, rushing for 216 YPG in the same frame. In other words, this D is TERRIBLE ALL AROUND!!!
