To rebuild the defense, it starts with several high draft picks and undervalued free agents.

We have heard the mantra over and over again, DC's say they need to make offense's one dimensional and their #1 priority is to stop the run. If that is achieved, it allows defensive lineman to pin their ears back and rush the QB. It allows DC's the ability to use exotic rush packages. The Cowboy Defense is rarely in these situations due to their inability to stop the run on the early downs. It makes it far more difficult to get off the field, when they have to defend the run/pass on third and short yardage.

The focus of the rebuilding needs to start up the middle:

-Need to strengthen the DT position to protect the Linebackers
-Need instinctive linebackers who can see plays before they are happening
-Need a high level, tackling safety who can make plays at or behind the line of scrimmage
Been on here preaching fix the middle for years. But, football genius n son don't value DT or S...so yeah.

Nope, you take that top rated defensive player on your board, if there is not a higher rated offensive player. Dlaw and Gregory is a very good combo. You have Hill, Woods, Gallimore, and Hamilton on the inside. There is room to improve, but they can be competent.

You take the best player available on defense no matter what position.

Cowboys defense in 2019 allowed the 8th lowest yards per carry, and had one of the best offenses.

8-8

When will yall catch up with the times and understand run defense isn't close to as important as stopping the pass.

Come on people

Don't disagree, however, a lot will depend upon who is the DC next season. Are we going to continue to run a hybrid scheme, which has been a major fail with Nolan and Ryan before him.

While everyone else is busy overpaying for WR's and CB's, Belly was busy signing Malcolm Brown and Danny Shelton and showing the Rams in the super bowl how to NOT let teams run up the middle.

You cannot cherry pick stats to determine if a defense is good or not.

In my opinion, the #1 defensive need!

I would go one step further. To rebuild the team it starts with big strong men on the O line and D line who will not get bullied like the clowns we have now.

I know hatcher made a pro bowl the last season he was here but from what I understood it was similar to tank lawrence as in he freelanced alot.

We got interior linement getting pushed 5 yards downfield into our LBs, whipped, trucked, and then some.

It's not a cherry picked stat, it is THE stat that tells you how successful the other team was at running against us on a per attempt basis.

Chiefs were bottom 4 in stopping the run last season. Won the super bowl.

You can't ignore facts.

Isn't this fundamental? Why is it the Cowboys brain trust does not see this? Why are they unwilling to invest in DT and S? From 1992 to present, 44% of the Cowboys first 4 round draft picks have been DE, LB and CB. That's 57 draft picks and 27 of those came in the first two rounds. Over the same period 10% of their picks were DT and S. and of those 14 selections, 4 came in the fists 2 rounds! In the meantime they have draft 4 RBs and 5 TEs.

Okay, so the draft isn't the only way to obtain players for these positions. They can sign free agents too, or make trades. So who was the last competent DT the Cowboys signed or acquired in a trade? La'roi Glover? I guess we could argue that David Irving was a good DT. They picked him off of KCs practice squad. Still taking the cheap route.

The problem with the Cowboys strategy is playing out before our eyes this year. If your cheap options don't work out you are left with gaping holes in the defense. McCoy got hurt, because that's what older players do, and Poe is way over the hill. So now we are relying on Woods, another inexpensive bargain basement acquisition, an overpriced aging ineffective veteran, a rookie 3rd round pick, and a practice squad player. The situation at Safety is even worse.

No, do NOT take a higher rated O player. If one slides who is really that good, trade.

Taking more O players in the 1st doesn't fix anything.

Chiefs changed their D, and were the best D in the NFL for the last 6 games after having time to adjust to the new scheme. Held 3 of the last 6 teams to single digits.

They allowed 4.9 yards per carry allowed in the playoffs, and won the Super Bowl.

Because? Say it with me! Passing offense and passing defense are immensely more important than rushing offense and defense, with the exception of two teams on one side of the ball.

More important? Sure, but you still gotta have 'em.

Then you trade down.

I don't care if they take all defensive players. They need to take the best player on their board for every pick, and fill in with cheap free agents.
