With the exception of obvious trolls masquerading as Cowboy fans, I hate the 'real fan' ploy. I may think someone's 'real stupid', but I don't every say they're not 'real fans.'

Our fans have an obligation to represent the team well, and it's embarrassing that they, collectively, too often don't, but that's not the same thing as not being fans. Nobody spends as many hours as we do on message boards if they don't love the team in their own fashion.

Where are all these "real fan" accusation posts, anyway? I bet not one post in 50, or maybe 100, ever says anything about someone not being a "real fan".

There was one posted the other day about "You're not a real fan if you blame the refs"

C'mon CL, folks are good for accusing other posters of not being a real fan. Based on what criteria? I don't know. Maybe if there was a fan handbook to read, we'd have a better idea of what a "real fan" is.

I love the Zone, because it does seem to have the some of most intelligent posters.

That said, it also seems to have some of the most self-absorbed posters who, often times, run in packs.

Some times, if you have an opinion that is counter to another poster's opinion not only can you expect them to come at you, but you can also expect a certain amount of his friends to come at you strictly because you dared to question a buddy. They do it under the guise of being "real" football fans or having some super, secret football knowledge that no one else has.

Can't tell you how many times I've read something along the lines as, "how dare you cross him, he's a 'respected' member of the board. Yadda, yadda, yadda."

Obviously, it's ridiculous because no one is 100% correct when it comes to the game or the Cowboys, but you'll see it anyway.

I do find it amazing that a fan, any fan, can come in hear espousing their way as being the only was to be a TRUE fan, and anything that is contrary requires other fans to...wait for it..."turn in his fan card."

Gets me every time.

I love you.

A "real" fan, a "real" man, etc. You will hear this stuff a lot. It only bothers you if you let it.

In one ear, out the other. Try it. It works.

Fan is derived from the word 'fanatic'. Per dictionary.com link :

fa⋅nat⋅ic

–noun 1.a person with an extreme and uncritical enthusiasm or zeal, as in religion or politics.
Origin:
1515–25; < L fānāticus pertaining to a temple, inspired by orgiastic rites

Synonyms:
1. enthusiast, zealot, bigot, hothead, militant. Fanatic, zealot, militant, devotee refer to persons showing more than ordinary support for, adherence to, or interest in a cause, point of view, or activity. Fanatic and zealot both suggest excessive or overweening devotion to a cause or belief. Fanatic further implies unbalanced or obsessive behavior: a wild-eyed fanatic. Zealot, only slightly less unfavorable in implication than fanatic, implies single-minded partisanship: a tireless zealot for tax reform. Militant stresses vigorous, aggressive support for or opposition to a plan or ideal and suggests a combative stance. Devotee is a milder term than any of the foregoing, suggesting enthusiasm but not to the exclusion of other interests or possible points of view: a jazz devotee.

Related Words for : fanatic fiend, fanatical, overzealous, rabid

fanatic

c.1525, "insane person," from L. fanaticus "mad, enthusiastic, inspired by a god," originally, "pertaining to a temple," from fanum "temple," related to festus "festive" (see feast). Current sense of "extremely zealous," especially in religion, is first attested 1647. The noun is from 1650, originally in religious sense, of Nonconformists.
"A fanatic is someone who can't change his mind and won't change the subject." [Winston Churchill]

But they're not synonyms; nor are they used interchangeably. If they were, there'd be no need for two words. Instead, we use those two words to differentiate mere fans from fanatics.

Like everything in life, it's all in the eye of the beholder. However I agree with the person that said everybody that comes here is a true fan, it takes some form of effort to read and post, and its not like we could not find a million other things to occupy our time with. The forum is fine for its purpose.

Actually, 'fan' is just an abbreviated form of the word 'fanatic' where the syllables were truncated for ease of use and not to add or change the meaning.

Through popular use, it's now a contraction that's commonly used for sporting events, which is helpful in distinguishing sports fanatics from, say, religious fanatics, but that's about the only meaningful distinction with the contracted word.

Too many homers in this forum.
By defintion, there should be Cowboy "homers" on a website created and dedicated to following and discussing the Cowboys. If this was just a generic "I love football" site than homerism might not be quite as acceptable.

But, there are homers and there are HOMERS...so I get your point.....a few cannot see any negatives.

There are several people on this board that find the need to always question or make ignorant statements like "a real fan would do this or do that"...

My first thought is who died and named you the REAL FAN police?

The dictionary version of a sports fan:

  1. An enthusiastic devotee of sports
    - fan, rooter
There are several Cowboys forums to choose from and I started coming here because this site seems to have more intelligent posters and more informed participants. However, there are those that feel the need to belittle or question whether posters are REAL FANs or not...come on peeps!

We are all fans, some more extreme than others but not any less a fan. I love the Cowboys, but I also don't wear beer goggles when I watch a game or root them on. I call it like I see it and if the opposing team makes a good play I cheer that on because I love good football and that doesn't make me not a REAL FAN of the Cowboys.

I can understand trolls coming on this board and talkin smack. But yesterday there were alot of people on here saying people weren't "real Cowboys fans" if they blamed the refs for the outcome Sunday.

I posted yesterday that there were 3 major factors to the loss and the refs played a large part in that loss among the other factors that contributed. The NFL even admitted they made mistakes that resulted in a 14 point swing for the Packers.

Every Cowboys fan on here is a REAL FAN...lets just leave it at that...

GO COWBOYS!!! BRING ON THE DEADSKINS!!!

I am taking a guess this is directed towards me. I posted it the way I did for a reason. I believe if we executed we way we are capable then we would have won no matter what the pathetic refs did. I am sorry you want to point fingers instead of addressing the reality of the situation. Those that want to whine and cry about how unfair things are can go ahead and do that if it makes them feel better. If it helps justify a whooping by GB in your mind, so be it. I live in the real world. A results driven world where crying and *****ing instead of fixing the problems gets you fired.

Go ahead and cry and scream about the refs. It's not why we lost.

Well, I am pretty sure there is no pack of groupies sticking up for my opinion.

Based on the numbers of issues I have had with fellow "fans" I would say the opposite is true, The OP in this thread is a perfect example. He can say what he wants but I am wrong to say what I feel. To each their own. Hope the OP can see his hypocrisy in writing what he did.
