I've read various reports of him being the best candidate for DC and that he was attending the Cotten Bowl Game with Jones & Garrett but I thought he was under contract with Miami and for Dallas to sign him it has to be for a higher position, however hes already got the title "Assistant Head Coach" with Miami. So unless hes Dallas Cowboys official "Head Coach" how could he end up in Dallas ? I'm not understanding this whole situation.

Assistant HC is a false title. It holds no water with the NFL. It's more of an acknowledgment or show of appreciation for various teams.

The Cowboys did not have to allow Miami to interview Tony Sparano. The Dolphins did not have to allow the Cowboys to interview Garrett.

Under contract means just that, you are obligated to that team unless by mutual agreement the team allows someone to leave and void the contract for a better deal.

Miami allowed Bowles to interview for the HC job. He was not a Coordinator there despite the AHC title. If Miami agrees it is a good opportunity for him they will probably let him go.

Teams do compromise with each other quite often as evidenced by these 2 teams in recent years. It is actually very rare that a team says an outright no like we apparently did with Herring. Garrett must want him to stay.

Miami would have to let him out of his contract.

If they'd hired a new head coach, that might have been pretty likely. With Sparano probably returning, it's still very possible, but less of a sure thing.

So for Dallas to sign him as DC that's considered a stepup from his current title? So from what your saying if Dallas wants him as DC there's nothing Miami can say about it ?

What if Miami likes him and say's we will give you the Miami DC title does he have to stay in Miami ?

No. Miami has to let him go, but it's something they might be willing to do if he wants to leave.

Why don't you lead us in this measure instead of questioning it?

It isn't considered a step up or down actually though Coordinator is generally seen as higher than AHC if that AHC is not a coordinator.

Has Miami granted Dallas permission to interview Bowles as a coordinator? I ask this because I hope that an accusation of tampering is not in the future.

Craig

I really doubt that Sparano would block Bowles from getting a DC gig, especially when Jerry let Bowles make a lateral move to Miami in the first place and also let Ireland do essentially the same.

No they granted him permission to interview as the HC and that's what they did.

Jerry did nothing wrong.

If they have it has not been reported anywhere. I expect they will though. As of now he has not been offered the job officially, but I think it is pretty obvious he wants it.

Could we be tampering with him. I wondered this after reading Bowles, Jones and Garrett were going to the Cotten Bowl together.

No. There is no tampering at this point.

It doesnt matter what title an assistant coach has. He can be asst HC & offensive coordinator, or just be a quality control guy. If he is under contract with his current team, he cant leave for ANY assistant coach position, regardless of the title unless that team gives him permission. The only move they cant prevent is a move from Asst coach (any title) to Head Coach, or Head Coach to GM, or as I understand it an assistant front office position to GM or Director of FO.

This was changed a few yrs ago, when teams began giving the bogus title of "Assistant Head Coach" and calling that a "promotion" so they could steal an assistant coach from another team and have it be a lateral move, or a slight upgrade in overall responsbility.

This is correct. The ONLY way we can hire Bowles is if Miami allows us to since he is not coming here for the Front Office or HC position.

They are going to grant it. They just have not yet.

I just don't want to see any allegations of tampering brought into play that could result in a lost draft pick. I wouldn't be all that concerned about it, but Ireland appears to be a first class jerk as of late.

Most likely Bowles will be granted permission as you suggest and nothing will come of it.

I guarantee nothing will come of it. Jerry and Jason are not stupid and neither is Bowles. As of right now he was at a football game as Jerry's guest. He can even be scouting for Miami technically.

I am sure Ireland knew from the beginning what Jerry was interviewing Bowles for and I am sure Bowles knew too, despite what he said. I can't imagine in my wildest that Jerry would try to pull something over on Miami.

That would be just stupid and even crazier to suggesy that he was.

Good point mentioning Ireland. Jerry was supportive of Ireland when he got offered the Miami job. Ireland will not stab Jerry in the back.
