Defensive coordinator would be considered a step up for Bowles so I'd imagine they'd allow him out of the contract.

I've read various reports of him being the best candidate for DC and that he was attending the Cotten Bowl Game with Jones & Garrett but I thought he was under contract with Miami and for Dallas to sign him it has to be for a higher position, however hes already got the title "Assistant Head Coach" with Miami. So unless hes Dallas Cowboys official "Head Coach" how could he end up in Dallas ? I'm not understanding this whole situation.

The Cowboys did not have to allow Miami to interview Tony Sparano. The Dolphins did not have to allow the Cowboys to interview Garrett.

Under contract means just that, you are obligated to that team unless by mutual agreement the team allows someone to leave and void the contract for a better deal.

Miami allowed Bowles to interview for the HC job. He was not a Coordinator there despite the AHC title. If Miami agrees it is a good opportunity for him they will probably let him go.

Teams do compromise with each other quite often as evidenced by these 2 teams in recent years. It is actually very rare that a team says an outright no like we apparently did with Herring. Garrett must want him to stay.

Miami does have to give their permission for any coaching change excep HC, Bowles could not interview or come to dallas as a DC without Miami permission because he is under contract, they had to let Garrett out of his contract to come to Dallas as the QC coach, they could have block it or just said NO, but they gave their permission...
