Dan Jenkins wrote a novel called Semi-Tough. It was made into a film with Bert Reynolds and Kris Kristofferson. The film was so-so, but the novel was hilarious.
It was about two players on a pro team in Miami and a woman who completed the love triangle. The novel dealt with off the field issues, but it also revealed things about the Dallas Cowboys and the relationship between Don Meredith and Tom Landry.
A roman a clef if a book or film with characters written about real people. These characters are so transparent you know who they are in real life. An example would be Primary Colors about a southern politician and his wife as he runs for the Presidency. It was clearly Bill and Hillary.
So too, Semi-Tough had excerpts of the novel which were taken from real life between Meredith and Landry.
It has been years since I read it, but as I recall there was a curfew as the team was on the road and Meredith came into the hotel and sneaked into his room at day break. The novel has the two players as a running back and a wide receiver. But back in the day it was understood around Dallas this was about this team since Jenkins - a journalist - grew up in Ft. Worth and went to TCU.
Be advised, this novel is not PC.
