If the team thinks he is fully healed and doesn't need to be eased in, my guess is 20-22 touches is about the ballpark of how they will use him.

The key will be how much we can rely on the backups to carry some of the load. Tony Pollard isn't blessed with a Tony Pollard to back him up like Zeke was
Have there been any reports that he is 100% healed?......or that he's Gallups last season version of 100% healed?

It would be nfl malpractice if he gets more than 15 carries a game. Zeke didn't even avg more than that last year.

20 sounds about right considering the rest are rookies, well dowdle isn't a rook but he doesn't have any experience either. Maybe the young guys gain more trust as the season goes and they can rest pollard a bit more.

I see Pollard being used a bit more in the passing game. Around 4 or 5 catches a game. The rushing attempts will probably be in TP's average of around 15 carries.

Rico, Deuce, Turp and Lamb will get some rushes, so a lot more explosion n quickness from the rushing game this season.

I think on average he'll end up with 15 per game. 15 per game comes out to 255 carries over the year-if he plays all 17 games.

Notable RB's within a 240-270 carries last year:
Najee Harris
Cook
Jamaal Williams
Sanders
McCaffrey

I know Sanders and Williams played all 17 games. With Zeke gone, and no more favorites, I can see the offensive staff rotate in guys like Dowdle, Vaughn and possibly Luepke over the year and potentially on short weeks/guys being nicked up

FWIW 20 carries comes out to 340 carries a year. That's the amount Derrick Henry(349) and Josh Jacobs had
Seems like your thread is referring more to " carries" ..rushing the ball .. rather than touches

You do have it about right with the 15 carries average per game per Pollard. That's about right with
an All Purpose type like Pollard.

Pollard's game is in more that McCaffrey, Kamara, Aaron Jones, Austin Eker, Miles Sander type all purpose type.

Some here either don't get it (or refuse to want to get it) that Pollard is not a battering ram bell cow.
His style and frame is not a Zeke, Murray or Emmitt. You don't use him in that way.
But because that has been a Cowboys trend for so very long, (bell cow) .. i don't think they
can image-think it out any differently.

The other 'don't get it " with these is they also refuse to admit that Pollard is a healthy whole, he's
not returning and laboring off an ACL or Achilles tendon.

So you think now that he is the lead back getting paid 10 mill per year his touches are going to decrease?

That makes little sense.
I would like to see what he can do with 15 to 20 touches as to carries a game. And in the passing game A good 4 or 5. Just throwing that number out there though. I know sometimes it may not be as many. Depending what is working.

That's a key question. The comments I've seen from both the team & Pollard seem a little vague. They seem to suggest he is fully ready, but the statements leave a little doubt by saying things like "pretty much 100%" or "essentially completely healed".

We were told that Gallup was 100% healed to so I'm naturally skeptical of Dr. Jerry's prognosis

He was a full participant in camp, so there is that.

Two totally different injuries.

Gallup had a ACL tear ...
Pollard was a high ankle sprain and a fibula fracture that did not even need surgery or screws.

50 catches is a lot for a Cowboys RB. I think Emmitt had like 90 when he was a primary passing option in 1995 but for the most part it's been around 30 or so for our RB.

There are a lot of indications that our RB are going to be used differently. MM likes using perimeter sprint routes as well as angle, circle and wheel routes. We have not used much of those instead opting for pass protection and dump offs.

As for run touches, some like to handwave at 200+ carry seasons for Lacy, Grant, and McCallister. However outside of those 5 or so seasons he did a good job of keeping his backs to under 200 carries particularly when he had 2 viable RB. There are several examples of him dividing carries between multiple backs including their SB run.

He has been very outspoken in how he views Vaughn as a complete back. If you take him at his word, he has 2 backs he considers viable.

Considering Prescott has been pretty consistent at about 50 carries a season and there are only about ~430 carries a season, I doubt either Pollard or Vaughn get much over 200 carries. If they start using the sneak more and use the short passing game to supplement the run, I don't think either gets over 200 carries.

He's a rotational back. His touches will be about the same as before in most games. He can't handle more, and he's told us that.

He's interviewing for the other 31 teams this year, so he will be motivated.

Of course Gallup wasn't expected back at the beginning of the season, didn't participate in training camp and didn't come back until game 4 last year, so the timing isn't exactly apples to apples. It also wasn't the same injury. Still, only time will tell.
