Earlier this month, cornerback Brandon Carr said the Dallas Cowboys “have a ton of talent that nobody knows about.”

On Wednesday, Tony Romo likely revealed one of the players Carr was talking about.

Asked for a potential breakout candidate this season, Romo named third-year defensive lineman Tyrone Crawford.

“I think Tyrone Crawford is going to be a guy that will be shocking to a lot of people,” Romo said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. “I think if we would have had him last year, it would have been a very different defensive unit. I think without people knowing it, we’re getting a couple of first or second-round guys with him coming back from injury. I think he’s the guy that stands out to me as the first guy that’s going to be very, very difficult to deal with for offenses.”

I am interested to see what he does in a 4-3.

I don't know how to feel about him. He was kind of considered a reach in the 3rd round and more of a project player. He didn't play much as a rookie but looked okay when he did. But that was in a 3-4. Then we switched to a 4-3 and he got hurt walking into the building. So I have no idea. He's not really ideal size to play any D-line position, but our coaches claim he's versatile enough to play all of them. I really don't know. But I'm interested to see. We need all the help we can get. To be honest, I have very low expectations for the defense. I just hope we can not be the worst defense in the history of the NFL because I think the offense can be good enough to possibly get us to the playoffs.

I hope Tony is right. But there are a lot of DL I'll be rooting for this year.

That can't possibly occur. I have it on good authority from our resident experts that Crawford can't possibly be a good player . Ever.

Anyone else tired of these posts where someone else mocks the other point of view with the "this is impossible" routine?

Crawford may be a player or he may fade into complete anonymity, he is a total enigma at this (early) point of his career.

Crawford was fine as 3-4 DE. With all the talk from the coaches and now Romo I'm really excited to see him at 3 tech and LE.

Has Romo been wrong yet when predicting break out players?

Sounds good to me . . . Romo's seen plenty of talent come and go. Being a QB, he likely has seen Crawford bearing down on him a time or two (or more). Tyrone's name seems to get good mention a lot among the coaches as well. They just might all be right.

During his rookie year I focused on him when he was in the game and he was almost always disruptive.

Occasionally, mocking calls attention to something unnecessary. Take opinions stated as facts. An opinion can be definitive, yet flexible. For example, someone might say, "Tyrone Crawford didn't show up in Rob Ryan's defense, so there's little chance he will do anything in Rob Marinelli's defense." Whether it's accurate or not, the opinion is strong, but lacks a hard proclamation. In contrast, someone may say, "Tyrone Crawford was drafted for a 3-4 defense. He cannot play as a 4-3 D-lineman." The second opinion removes any doubt Crawford can play in the current defensive scheme before he actually plays in it.

Should the latter opinion be mocked? That's debatable, but one thing is certain. The opportunity for mocking opinions-made-fact happens because they are stated. Conversely, the likelihood is strong that the former opinion would be discussed without being mocked.

Romo has seen the disruptive ability of defensive lineman upclose--both on his roster and on other teams' rosters. I think his opinion carries considerable weight and not just the kind that has been constantly crashing down on him over the years from sacks. My main concern is how explosive Crawford will allow himself to be following his Achilles injury. Tearing one cuts into an athlete's confidence that it may re-occur. If he can overcome that fear and the Achilles holds up, Crawford may potentially be this year's Hatcher breakout player.

Maybe Tony watches practice and sees Crawford blowing up all his Olineman we spent 1st round picks on. That's my bet.
