When the Dallas Cowboys signed Tony Romo to a massive contract extension in 2013 (which I believed they had to do), the narrative suddenly changed for Romo and the Cowboys. Since he was now being paid top money, he needed to perform like a top quarterback.

For a while, that contract looked like it may be one of the worst in NFL history. After two back surgeries and a terrible outing by Romo versus the San Francisco 49ers, many of us (including myself) were crunching the numbers to see how many more years the team might have to survive with him. At that point in time, it looked like he may be finished as a top quarterback in the NFL. I was certain that we had seen the last of Romo-as-Houdini many of us have taken for granted over the years.

Fast-forward six weeks and Tony Romo has returned to playing at an elite level. Romo and the Cowboys have won six straight games and Romo is possibly playing quarterback at the highest level of his career. Since Week 1, Romo has thrown for 1,508 yards with 13 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He has had a quarterback rating of 113.8 since Week 1; only Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers have posted a better passer rating so far this the season.

But as 6-1 Dallas prepares for its Monday Night meeting with visiting Washington, Tony Romo's great statistical start shouldn't surprise you. Since Romo signed his contract extension during the 2013 offseason, Romo has been on fire. Here is how he compares with some of the top quarterbacks in the NFL since signing his extension:

Ok, all this crowing about elite talk makes me want to play devil's advocate:
  • What's defines an elite QB? For the most part, when I hear people talk about NFL elite QBs, I hear them talk about Manning, Brady, Brees, and Rodgers. Between them they have 10 Superbowl appearances, 6 Superbowl wins, and each of them has at least once Superbowl victory.
  • Ok, so I agree that winning the Superbowl is probably too high of a bar to measure whether a QB is elite or not. Let's lower it to playoff victories. Well, how many playoff games has Romo won in recent years? None.
  • Ok, let's forget playoff victories for a minute -- and look at regular season stats. There are 5 other QBs with 100+ QB ratings since the beginning of 2013. Romo isn't one of them. You can't call Romo elite if you either go with 100+ QB ratings or just say that you can't have more than 5 players in the "elite" category
  • Ok, maybe 100+ QB rating is a bit hard. I'll agree with that you that we should loosen the definition of "elite QB" to be the Top 6 QBs.... If "Elite" is Top 6 by QB rating since the beginning of 2013, we can all collectively agree that Romo is elite.
:)

I will prepare myself for flaming.

Other than the Packers all those team had a much better overall team around the QB. Romo has had to do more with much less. I doubt any of those QB could have done much better playing in Dallas.

Not going to flame ya. I'll put this all in laymen's terms; there are 32 teams, Romo is a top 10 quarterback. I would say that Romo is damn good.

I agree 100%. I think you can make a great argument Romo is Top 5-6.

The question is does that constitute elite?

I know this is a silly thing -- but there is no exact definition of 'Elite NFL QB', however, I sometimes tire of all the proclamations that 'see Tony Romo is elite", "Dez is the best WR in the league", "Demarco Murray is the best RB in the league", "Tyron Smith in the best LT in the league", "Martin is the best guard in the league", "that R McClain is the best 4-3 MLB in the league".... etc etc

I know it's a fan board and I'm guilty of the things sometimes too, however, it can be a bit much. I chalk it up to exuberance -- the Cowboys are 6-1 and kicking but and that makes everybody cheerful and optimistic... that doesn't mean that it wrong to sometimes change the underlying data behind the proclamations.

Sorry -- in a weird mood this morning...

All good brah. You bring an interesting twist. I've been guilty of calling Romo elite. I think I have anyway. We don't need Romo to be elite, just really good.

it is getting easier and easier to put up big numbers anymore with the way the new rules pretty much hogtie the defense.

To me elite is 4 players Brady Manning Brees Rogers. I think there is definite separation from that point down.

Then you have a group of the Rapist and Romo and Luck then more separation after that

the next batch includes Ryan and Flacco and Newton and maybe Wilson, Eli when he is on, Cutler when he is on

It's not just about the big numbers but where Romo is comparable to the other QBs.

He's been part of that top tier for years now, IMO.

The elite 4 myth is one of those things that people have been saying for so long that no one even fact checks anymore to see if it's still true (sort of like the big 4 of tennis). To me, the only QB who is truly on another level because of what he brings from a complete standpoint is Manning. Everyone else is stat padding to a degree.
