Tony Romo Has Been Elite Since Extension

Pretty clear that Manning, Rodgers, and Rivers are playing on a different level from the other good QBs on that chart. I'd say the definition of 'elite' is pretty wide ranging, but I have a hard time applying it to anybody, including Romo, not playing on that very top tier.

You can anoint his a ELITE when he wins a Super Bowl.

Manning numbers are sick but he has always choked a lot in post season.

Whatever man...he's the best of all time.

I mean what does he have to do? I mean if a quarterback doesn't win a SB every year he's a choker? I just don't get it.

I place those 4 at the top because of their body of work so far. It is more then the others; the Rapist is probably closest but he has had too many bad games and his first SB he was putrid.

Let the haters keep thinking Romo is not elite. We get the last laugh at the super bowl

Yes. Will.

Tony Romo Has Been Elite Since Extension

I disagree completely.

He has been elite for quite some time. Most of his career actually.

The only difference is he is playing in a system. He is handing the ball off.

It's the bad decisions and bad timing if those decisions that make others think otherwise.

Look, I am a big Romo supporter... But i have also ripped him for his brainouts at the most inopportune times. But we are talking about a guy that will go down as one of the best QBs of all time. He has a chance for at lest top 20 of all time.

Other than the Packers all those team had a much better overall team around the QB. Romo has had to do more with much less. I doubt any of those QB could have done much better playing in Dallas.

If Peyton Manning had been playing behind the bad OL Romo had for several years he would he out of football by now.

Question: How Do We Define ELITE? And Is everyone using the same DEFINITION?

In terms of positioning rankings in the NFL, my definition of "Elite" is "Top 5" at a position. Anything else is a slippery slope IMHO.

For NFL QBs, Manning, Brady, Rodgers, and Brees have been the Mt. Rushmore of NFL elite QBs for a while now. Brees is borderline this year, however, I don't think you get booted from the elite club until a full season of non-elite play has passed.

If you accept those 4, that leaves just 1 remaining spot for Luck, Rivers, Big Ben, and Romo to fight it out for. Is the Romo the best of that bunch? I'm not so sure.

It is tough to make a case against Rivers or Luck being that 5th guy.

So in summary, if you accept the definition of "Elite" being Top-5 at a position, then I don't think you can consider Romo elite.

For me it is...
Rodgers and P. Manning
Then a small gap
Brady and Brees
Then a big gap
Rivers
Then another small gap
Romo, Luck
Then another big gap
Roethlisberger, Newton, Ryan, Wilson, Stafford, Flacco

That is in my exact order. So I consider Romo the 6th best QB right now but Luck is very close to passing him. I think Manning is the best player of all time, but at this point in their careers I would rather have Rodgers. He can do more with less bc he can move and Manning is stationary. I'm not sure exactly where I consider the cut off for "elite" is. I defend Romo as much as anybody and although it makes sense to have 5 guys considered elite and I have a big gap after the 1st 5...I tend to think there are 7 I consider elite.

Thanks for answering the question. Sometimes, I think we're all not on the same page when it comes to the description of an "elite" quarterback. That's why, to me, it's more useful to hear people's definition of "elite" before answering these questions. I find the definition itself is very subjective.

So Brees was elite...but he's not now? Did you ever stop and think that maybe, just maybe, Brees hasn't forgotten how to call plays, throw the ball, or read defenses, but maybe, just maybe, there are other factors that are coming into play there?

P.S. Romo has a QB rating of 104.7 this year, tied with Tom Brady for fifth place, is fifth place not in the top five anymore? His team currently has the best record in the league. So not sure where your bias against Romo is coming from. It used to be that he would put up great numbers but it didn't always translate into a great record. Now he's got great numbers and a great record...and still it's not enough.

No offense, but after looking at that list the guy who is not getting enough love is Phillip Rivers.

I'm not allow to have negative thoughts about Romo anymore so I'll punt on this thread.

Yeah, Peyton Manning is by far the best QB in the NFL at the moment.

For the record I still have Brees as the #4 guy behind Manning, Brady, and Rodgers.

If you accept the fairly narrow definition of "Elite" being "Top 5 at the position", can you put Romo ahead of Rivers?
