He needs to take what peyton, i mean peyton's wife took.

Haha, well played. I'm no doctor, isn't that something that would actually help his condition? As in, if he wasn't an NFL player would that be prescribed to him?

It would. It promotes all sorts of healing. Plus he would get stronger. Its like magic in a bottle. Lets put it this way, he wouldnt get weaker because of it but it is a banned substance.

I don't understand why people are taking this as bad news. It's actually good. The CT scan showed Romo's collarbone is healing so well, the surgery to insert the metal plate may not be necessary. We'll know for sure in four weeks.

No matter what procedure Romo has- the metal plate or that "mumford" operation- he'll be back on the field for May's OTA's. And he's not going to take another hit until the third preseason game. There's a ton of time left for him to heal.

I might be sounding like the eternal optimist here, sorry if I am, but my big worry was the CT scan showing something bad (like poor healing or a displacement, etc.).

There are alot if depressed posters here. With the Cowboys everything is bad news to them.

Just what I thought, won't be available for OTAs.

So no work with Dez yet again in the off season.

Kind of the like the late decision on the back "procedure" a few years back.

Draft the QB.....please....

The opposite of what you say if he doesn't get the plate.
If he gets the plate, THEN he misses time.

But yeah, they should take a QB this year if there's one they really like.

Cowboys' Tony Romo: Next evaluation will determine if surgery is needed

Tony Romo will be evaluated in late February or early March to determine if surgery is necessary on his left collarbone, The Dallas Morning News reports.

Before undergoing a CT scan last week, Romo fully expected to have surgery at some point in the offseason, but the Dallas Cowboys now have some options to ponder. If the team opts for the first one, a set of screws will attach a plate over the collarbone in order to stabilize the area and avoid another fracture. As for the second choice, if the next CT scan reveals a suitable amount of bone growth and regeneration to last week's base line, he may undergo a Mumford procedure, in which part of "the distal clavicle is shaved off or removed." The latter procedure is preferable, as it reduces long-term stress on the collarbone versus the attachment of a plate. No matter which path Romo takes, he'll face a 6-to-8 week recovery, setting him up to take part in the entire offseason program.

Translation of P.R. speak into normal language :

When Tony broke his collarbone the 2nd time It was determined that he'd need a plate inserted so it would be strong enough to play football. The bone would need to heal before inserting the plate. By January it should have healed enough.

When they examined him in late January, it still wasn't healed enough. It had made progress but not enough.

Furthermore, the failure to heal is causing a pain issue. In patient welfare terms pain management has a higher priority than playing football.

They are going to wait another month to see if it heals. If it doesn't, they'll have to do the munford for pain management reasons and if so inserting the plate to play football cant be done.

I was hoping the plate would be inserted to keep this from happening again. And I like the thought of a bionic QB.

It seems like this decision should have been made months ago. So he can start training camp fully healed or as close to it as possible.

Time tables are set around the patient's good and actual healing time.

We all know how this will end. I can already hear the offseason excuses.

I really want Romo to get a ring. Just to throw it in all the haters faces.

But it pains me to see these topics every so often. I'm going to remain optimistic and hope for the best in terms of Romo and his health.

Something is fishy with report. Last week it was: if bone showed strong healing he would get plate. This week its: the bone shows good healing so he is gonna wait. Which is it? Just sounds like guy who doesn't have good options.

Sounds like a guy trying to get out of training camp. When a guy is not willing to do the work....it's time to move on.

...“The back’s not going to keep me out anymore,” Romo said. “I think the silly stuff is now still talking about the back, because it’s actually stronger than it has been. That part of the game, it seems as if I’m young again. I understand that other people want to talk about it, who have had back injuries. Some of them were probably either worse than mine or different. For me, the back is the furthest thing from my mind. It feels as strong as anything.

“Now the collarbone kept me out [this season]. That’s part of the deal. It happens sometimes. But we’re going to ensure it doesn’t happen again with whatever decision we make here, and I should be able to play another seven or eight years.”...

...“I’ve been throwing pretty hard here this last month,” Romo said. “I feel as good as I’ve felt in two or three years as far as back and the body and everything. It’s been actually a very exciting month mentally. I had plenty of time off last year. For me, this is kind of like an off-season already. I’ll be ready to go here soon, even though we have a little time left.”...
