Tony Romo really is playing exceptionally well this year.

If you subtract Tony Romo's first game against the 49ers his QB rating for the year would be 113.9. And honestly, I think you only need to subtract the first half of that game, but I didn't want to break down the numbers.

If you go further and take away his second game, he has a 117.8 QB rating. To put that into perspective, only Peyton Manning has a better QB rating than that for the year with 118.2 and it just tops Aaron Rodgers who has a 117.3.

Clearly Romo wasn't quite ready when the season opened, but he has been killing it since. The further we get from that 49ers game (and the titans game) the less impact those games will have on his numbers.

There are more shocking numbers to how well Romo is playing though.

His 2nd half numbers are ridiculous. He has a 127.8 QB rating in the second half of games. This shows how bad that first half against the 49ers was. In this second half of games he has scored 8 touchdowns on 1 interception.

Going forward even more ridiculous is his 3rd quarter stats, which are 145.4.

Tony Romo has a 129.2 QB rating on 3rd down... (the most important down in football...)

He is 3 for 5 on passes thrown 41+ yards

Surprisingly he is 2 for 10 on passes thrown 31-40 yards... we need to start hitting on these.

He is 6 of 14 for passes thrown 21-30 yards.

I think this is the result of having a real offensive coordinator in Linehan, having a real offensive line, and having a supportive running game.

The thing is, he was usually pretty good without a running game. It's just a shame it took Dallas this long to put one back together, because there's a season or two they might have been able to make some noise in the playoffs had they had an O-line like this one.

The funny thing is, all the guys ahead of Romo in passer rating (Manning, Rodgers, Rivers) have improved their ratings since week 1 as well (recall that GB got crushed by SEA and SD lost to ARI that week). So Tony's 4th for the season, and 4th since week 2. He's 3rd since week 3, squeaking by Manning but behind the others.

Can't use ratings to compare across eras. Have to use rankings.

I think ranking are better Percy, however, they don't factor in post-season success.

Montana was incredible in the post-season. In my mind, that raises him up above Manning.

That was just to say that Montana is very much on the list, if you're looking at the right list. You can't compare across eras with passer rating.

I think people have been unfair in regards to this.

I don't think it's just the pass happy rule changes, but also that QBs are playing better football than they ever have before. They're more athletic, have stronger arms, and have a better understanding of the game.

I think the same can be said of defenses, though.

Defensive backs used to be able to actually play back in Joes day. Now that can't even look at a WR with out a flag.

I think that strengthens my argument.

I think the best example is kickers, they're kicking from further away and more accurately than ever before. This doesn't have to do with rule changes, but an evolution of the position. You send Dan Bailey to 1970, and he'll be the best kicker by far.

Aikman recently came out and said that Romo was a better QB than he ever was. And I think that is true. I think you had a hand full of teams in the pre salary cap era who could put together really high profile offenses, but it wasn't the norm. I think now even with the salary cap, you have QBs who have been developed in pro style offenses in college who are more NFL ready than they were 20 years ago.

Just curious Percy, where does Romo rank on this list?

Not really. If the same can be said for defenses, -- and there's no reason to believe it can't -- then why are these more athletic, stronger, smarter defenses giving up higher passer ratings?

As I said, because it's become a more pass oriented league with QBs who understand the game a lot more. Even though the difficulty has gone up, you have QBs who can perform much better.

I'm not saying the rule changes haven't been a factor, but I think they're less of a factor than people want to claim.
