Too dramatic of a change in philosophy?

Look at the teams making noise today. Rams. Jaguars. Bucs. Texans. Oakland. Dolphins.

Have you heard much from these teams? Patriots. Steelers. Seahawks. Packers.

I am NOT saying we are in that bottom group, we are most likely somewhere in between them (Texans purrrhaps better).

But I'd rather operate like the below than the above.

Patriots, Steelers, Seahawks and Packers are much closer to a SB than we are and thus, they can simply tweak the roster here or there.

We have bigger issues than they do, hence, we probably should be a bit more active in free agency trying to plug at least one serious hole instead of shopping for depth players and hoping the draft is going to take care of all our other needs.

This is a good point.

However, the key to free agency is get one or two key guys, not a long list of them. If you're shopping for everything, that means you've got nothing.

Lamar Miller would have been perfect for the situation at hand. Then, a couple worker bees, and do everything else in the draft.

JAX is going to be pretty good next year.

Bortles, Robinson, Hurns, Ivory, Yeldon, JThomas with that improved D.

And they still have 40m in cap space and a pool in their stands....jk

They are watching the Patriots saying to themselves (see, were doing the right thing). We know how much we copy that team. Smh

All teams that have much more success drafting than we do.

Statistics show drafting ability is completely randomized across teams and GMs. People won't want to agree with that, because it's more fun to put a story to outcomes. When you have small sample size (team draft classes) a small 2 or 3 year win streak can build a good team. I think Mo Claiborne singlehandedly shifted our recent draft history and therefore narrative.

I do agree with you and @Sydla on that. I didn't mean to imply we do nothing. We need to do something to improve now (Romo's age), and since we prioritize the run game it's an area to spend resources - especially when you have spent what we have on the OL - to create a dominate unit. We have money to spend, so hopefully some solid tier 2 guys will be signed to upgrade other areas of the team. I assume a RB is coming somewhere in the top 4 rounds.

It almost feels like a stone cold lock that Dallas is going to invest in a RB early in the draft based on their pursuit to at least upgrade based on what we heard about the interest in Murray and Miller.

At least that's something. We need a RB.

To me, if you're going to go QB at #4, it is incumbent that you spend on big names in free agency to fill areas of need.

This tells me they aren't going QB at #4.

Maybe someone can list where we were cap-wise at the end of free agency over the last 10 years?

I think last year we had a little bit of room.
But from what I recall we have pretty much spent all of the cap space every year other than that.

Is that true? If so, how can anyone say they are pinching pennies.

The greater problem has been the players not working out that they actually have decided to spend the money and/or draft picks on...ex. Carr, Claiborne, etc.

The problem is the last part, it is hard to just say they did not work out when you were the one evaluating the players and actually choosing the groceries so to speak!

I agree with this premise.

I agree with this premise.

Difference is Pat's, Steelers seahawks and packers have won playoff games and Superbowl in the last 20 years... This team is very frustrating to say the least and I have been a cowboys fan for 30 years. Jones in a football idiot and Garrett is a terrible coach with no vision...

I think there is some over reaction taking place. I expect Dallas will make some moves in FA and get some guys who can help this team. Looking at list of FA there is still several quality players on the market.

Hope they can find more than depth in the second tier of FA. If not I dont see how you draft a QB at 4 without calling this rebuilding. To many holes else where to justify a pick that will sit on the bench.

IF we don't want to give that to a RB, there is no reason to even consider Elliott because his rookie deal will be very close to that. Last year's #4 got 4 years almost 24m.

That's why It wouldn't shock me if Jerry tries to trade down to save some money.

I think it's the right way to go... But this organization is always a step behind. Always reacting instead of being proactive..
