This promises to be a longer summer than usual with optimism brimming over and pom-poms dripping from every thread around here. Such is what 12-4 brings, especially after watching it take a perverse referee interpretation to shut it down.

But some needed house cleaning hangs over Valley Ranch, and it needs to be done. Too much hope and potential to let these things linger much longer.

DEZ BRYANT: Get Dez signed, or not. Whoever is holding this up needs a frying pan to the forehead. He's not going anywhere, nor does he want to, and the Calvin Johnson contract was a stupid thing done by a stupid franchise. Both sides need to step forward and get it done, or put this to bed before training camp and call the long-term deal off. This need not hang over training camp. Sign him or franchise him, but put it to bed before camp. Do it now, or just walk away from the table until next offseason.

RUNNING BACKS: I'm convinced now that this running back situation thing is more concerning to coaches than they let on. The Ben Tate and Felix Jones tryouts weren't for just camp bodies. They're worried. Joseph Randle only runs one basic set of plays out of one formation, and I don't think the coaches have a lick of faith in him. Darren McFadden is not a feature back in their eyes either, and while I think they like Ryan Williams the most as a player, they certainly don't have hopes of him staying healthy as a lead horse. Teams that feature the run this much need a bellcow. Running back by committee is fine for pass-oriented teams, but not for what this team has become. I'm also convinced they didn't see Demarco Murray as the answer either.
Otherwise, it's Romo for 40+ passes a game again, and I know they don't want to expose him again to that punishment.

Part of me thinks Minnesota and Peterson are playing nice right now because they need to drive up his value before the Vikings will even consider a trade. They rightly can't sell a third-round pick to their fan base, so unless somebody comes forward with a meaty offer, that won't happen. Likewise, anyone of value who's younger is not going to be available for a song.

McClay and company know they have to address this, but so much of it is out of their control if they don't turn loose of high picks and good players, neither of which they want to do. I sense a little panic setting in here, and I'm not buying the happy face they're trying to put on this.

GREG HARDY: Obviously, this one's out of their control, but they want answers asap. Judge Henderson is taking his sweet time on this ruling, and I'm sure they want to get on to the federal courts to get this finalized. This lends itself to the possibility that a negotiation is going on because the NFL is going to look even more stupid when another ruling is completed overturned by the federal courts. Yes, the league wants to show a tough face on domestic violence, but they also need to show that they have an elementary grasp of the rules they have in place (and had at the time of the incident) if they want to be taken seriously as a governing body for player rules violations. They don't want every ruling going to federal court, and that's the precedent they're setting.

I think the Cowboys privately believe this is a 0-2 game suspension by rule, and they're OK to just sit back and "support the league's decision" as Hardy and the NFLPA takes this through the process. Our opinions of the matter aside, the rules were the rules at the time, and by that measure, this is actually should be just a slap on the wrist, and the NFL knows it. But with the intense focus on this issue after Ray Rice, they're trying to make something of substance stick.

The Cowboys need resolution here so they can build the roster and strategize accordingly.

BRANDON CARR: There's no doubt that Carr is overpaid, but there's also no doubt the Cowboys need him. Leverage belongs to Carr. Claiborne's health issues and the Cowboys logical desire to play Byron Jones as a free safety make Carr a vital piece to next season, and with a pass rush, he'll be a much better player. Still, that's an ugly cap hit with more looming behind it. I think he wins in the end, but they need to put it to bed in June.

The Dez decision must be made before training camp, per the CBA. If they don't sign him to a long term deal by 15 July, then they have no choice but to let him play the year under the tag.

Nice post. Always a good read, erod. Though I will disagree with your premise regarding the running back situation. I've heard it more than once by some in here that truly believe in their heart of hearts that just because Ben Tate and Felix were brought in for a look see that this was a move brought on by fear, and that the panic has officially set in. Did anyone really believe that the front office had faith that these two cast off's would be any kind of solution to replacing the almighty and irreplaceable DeMarco Murray? Chock it up to churning and burning.

I look at it from a different perspective. The Cowboys, way before the deadline to resign or let Murray walk, looked at all their options, knowing full well what to expect if X or Y did or did not happen.

No way are the Cowboys these days merely flying by the seat of there pants... at least not anymore.

Many, like Cowlishaw and some other meIDIOTS feel that the Cowboys are all in for one last hoorah before the likes of Romo and Witten are sent to pasture. Again, I wholeheartedly disagree. The Cowboys are building for the future while keeping an eye on the present. No more. No less.

We have every position on the team set with good starters and good backups, other than 2 positions (RB/1-tech). Those two positions happen to be the most easily replaceable and least impactful positions on the offense and defense, respectively.

Despite that pretty rare accomplishment, we are still both (1) a young team and (2) not in cap hell.

The front office deserves kudos, not panic.

Out of all of those RB is a situation is a concern.
Dez will either get the extension or on July 15th sign the franchise tag
Hardy Cowboys likely are planning for the worse (which is 10 games) and hope for the better
Carr will remain in Dallas at least this season
Back to RB I don't see Dallas giving up multiple picks and high picks to get Peterson, I think this has been driven by the media, fans and Peterson trying to get as much out of the vikes as he can. I think he plays the season in Minn. Dallas I think will continue to monitor the guys we have and bring in guys like Tate or Johnson if they are not comfortable enough with current RB

If you look at Randle, they basically used him in one formation and a single type of play. You don't see him moving around at all, going in motion, lining up next to Romo in the shotgun, etc. All the things Murray did, Randle did not get used like that at all.

That's why I think McFadden is here. Whatever his ability remains, he knows pass protection and how to work from different positions on the field.

Basically, they have four different and useful guys, but they don't have someone that can do it all. To be a smash-mouth running team, you need that versatile workhorse.

And no, other than Gurley, I don't think that guy was in the draft necessarily.

Way too soon to panic. When it comes down to it, NE won the superbowl with a mixed bag of running backs.

Adrian Peterson- I believe the Vikings need him for 1 huge reason. They are building a new stadium that is going to open next year and they need that team to make the playoffs and also have a franchise player like Peterson to help assure the luxury boxes and seat licenses are all bought.

Our RB situation- I believe the team really thought they would be able to keep Murray with the offer they made him. The Eagles got desperate at the last minute. By that point all the other backs that were Free Agents in the Murray mold were already signed by other teams. They don't seem to want to feature a speed back like CJ Spiller. I believe they didn't put a very high value on the draft backs that were available to them in each round. They feel McFadden and Randle are as good as any of the 2nd tier of rookie backs and if there is a difference its a small one that wont really matter. I feel the front office and coaches are going to go into this season realizing that they may have to throw a little more. They have enough confidence in the offensive line and the rest of the players to take what is given by the defenses each week. Maybe the committee of fresh legs cycling in and out of the game will cause us to be pleasantly surprised. No true bellcow type a fresh dose of Randle, McFadden, and Williams strategically playing could really work in the second half of games. Plus all 3 guys will be competing every week so you wont have any guys taking plays off or getting too comfortable.
Unfortunately this is the best we can hope for at this point. These are our backs and for better or worse our team will have to make it work.

Greg Hardy- No one is going to speak out against the league for what they are doing to Hardy. Jerry Jones does not want to come off as being soft on domestic violence.

If they actually were worried about RB, it's a safe bet they'd have done something about it. They had ample opportunity. I believe they really do like what they have. They told us as much going into the draft.

Thanks, I was just about to post something like this.
If the coaches were concerned about RB or DT, they would have been doing something about it. now, doesn't mean they could, but I'm sure we would of heard about it.
We hear about everything else it seems. Rather true or not.

I think they are content with seeing what they have in TC, then go from there. but if an opportunity presents itself to improve, without giving up too much, or a big cap hit. Then we will see that move be made.

Joseph Randle only runs one basic set of plays out of one formation, and I don't think the coaches have a lick of faith in him.

Is this true about only running one formation or are you just making that up?

I've gotten to the point where I have some faith in the front office's decision making and am excited to see how things play out. They obviously decided to allocate cap space to the defense at the expense of the running back position while still attempting to have RB options that could work out but in a different way than last seasons reliance on one RB. I think this was a logical move on their part.

In the salary cap and free agency era, I don't believe any team can go into a season without weak spots but as it sits right now, it appears to me the Cowboys have positioned themselves to be in the running for the playoffs and beyond despite having concerns in various spots.

Some players will disappoint, some will surprise, some will get injured but at the end of the day, it seems to me that how these three factors shake out will determine what kind of success or failure they will have in 2015.

At this juncture, I feel like we have a dog in the hunt and thats what I hope for going into each season. It should be a fun ride providing they don't lose a key component like Romo or Dez (which is why I hate trading our draft picks because our #1 could get valuable really quick if Romo were to go down early for the entire season).

Time will tell, in the mean time:

I'm a fan of the Dallas Cowboys but not a fan of some of the fans that think fandom should be treated like a soap opera. All the speculation and second guessing drives me nuts. The team is run like a tight ship and so you can bet that if the FO had doubts about any area on the team, it would already be dealt with and a plan in place. Now, you may disagree with the course they are on but the speculation that certain contract deals are being held up by the FO, or certain positions are a point of weakness because the FO is not acting to make them better is all nonsense.

Felix Jones and Ben Tate does not mean they are worried about RB. You've got two injury prone guys (McFadden, Williams), and another scatback in Dunbar. God forbid they try to get another healthy body at RB just in case.

They were transparent about the position all off-season, so there's no reason to believe otherwise.
