Toomer: Romo better than Eli

Eli is NOT Troy Aikman, not even in the same league.

Not in the same league? Please explain how they're not in the same league. Troy Aikman was never a stats machine but played better as the stakes got higher, same as Eli. He had a great defense, same as Eli. He had a great running game, same as....... well Eli didn't have a running game last year but you get the picture.

Troy did not rely on immaculate catches, throwing ducks in the air only to be luckily caught and the like. Troy knew how to read a defense and systematically pick it apart. Eli can read defenses too, but not as well as Troy.

You can't compare the two though, totally different era's. I bet in today's game, Troy would put up ungodly numbers. Back then, he did not have too, it wasn't a passing game.

I am not saying Eli is not good because he is a good QB, two rings prove that. But, he is not of the same caliber that Aikman is, he was a prototypical QB for that era. I would compare Troy more to Young than Eli.

Eli Manning=Troy Aikman
Tony Romo=Steve Young (before the Super Bowl MVP)

That's not a slight to Tony because Steve Young was an excellent qb even before he won a sb. Hopefully he will get his breakthrough this year.

:lmao2:

OMG! Now, that is one stupid comment!

Now that is just crap.

He's right. Eli will eventually pass Troy on the alltime passing list in a less amount of years then troy did.

Aikman is overrated around here. He was a good quarter back surrounded by a great team.

Anyone who says that Troy Aikman is overrated never watched the guy play in his prime. Aikman is not overrated. If anything, he is still under appreciated

I grew up in the 90s and seen enough of Troy Aikman. I didn't say he was overrated as a player. I said COWBOYS FANS overrate him. Emmitt Smith made that offense. Not Troy Aikman. Troy was top 5 in passing yards once in his career. Only 4 times in the top 10.

Troy Aikman did everything asked of him and asked for nothing extra in return.

Unlike the 'numbers' quarterbacks who had to 'get theirs', Aikman was the consumate team player who simply wanted to win.

If he was in a 'passing offense' with his arm strength, accuracy , and abilities, his numbers would have been astronomical.

But, at the end of the day, the only 'number' that Aikman cared about was the number of championships his team won.

And for me, that's the most important number of all.

Great post Stash, and spot on. I'll say again, Aikman isn't overrated by anyone. If anything, he is underrated.

You don't come in a debate as put in hypotheticals. Saying troy Aikman "would" put up astronomical numbers in a passing offense is like me saying if i continued to play hockey in high school i would have made it to the NHL. It didn't happen. That's the bottom line.

Aikman won SBs which is an team accomplishment. But he wasn't the MVP of the team. Emmitt always was and will be. His record will probably never be broken with how the career of the running back is short in today's game. He was a Good technician as a QB. His mechanics were flawless but lets not act like he was that great when he had an HOF supporting cast around him.

But Eli will never be as good as Troy. But yet that description fits Eli well.

Funny isn't it? Homers.

Eli's better. The fact that Romo's numbers put Eli's to shame each and every season is merely a coincidence. And football's not a team sport, so those 2 Super Bowls should be fully attributed to Eli's greatness (despite his overall numbers and despite the Giants O not even scoring that many points in either Super Bowl).

/sarcasm

Aikman's intelligence, arm strength, and accuracy aren't hypotheticals. And they're skills that Eli Manning does not come close to. The only things even close about he and Aikman are multiple Super Bowl wins.

And one guy was part of one of the NFL's greatest dynasties. The other was on a team that got hot at the right time - twice.

Aikman did exactly what he needed to in order to win championships. If that meant handing the ball off 30+ times to do it? So be it.

He put ego aside for the greater good of the team.

I would never try to find fault with such selfless play.

I didn't say those were hypotheticals. The shoulda coulda wouldas you posted about his numbers were. How many dynasties exist now days? That era is over in the NFL with the cap. So that's Eli's fault? His team won and he was a big catalyst to winning those SB. Sounds just like sour grapes. Cowboys been losers while Eli's been winning. Eli has a very comparable arm to Aikman. Now his accuracy isn't close. Eli can read a defense. Lets not act like he has no football IQ. He comes from an football family who studies the game.

Oh so because he put his ego aside his stats suffered? lol whatever.

Yeah, except about the arm strength, accuracy, etc.

And the fact that one guy created one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history, while the other? Not so much.

Of course he is going to pass him up in stats. He throws the ball a lot more because of today's game. However, one key stat Eli will never gain is completion % over Troy.

After comparing each of their first 8 years in the league, Eli has almost 800 more pass attempts than Troy did. Eli also 31 more interceptions than Troy did.

It is a different era, Troy was not required to pass like Eli is. I have no doubt that Troy would bury Eli in stats if both played in the same time-frame.

To say that Troy is overrated is asinine. If anything, Eli is the overrated one. Maybe Emmit was the the Cowboys then, but Troy was the glue that held that team together. He instilled in his teammates that winning was the only option.

He created those dynasties? I guess the other hall of fame players were made by troy. You're kidding yourself. Each benifited from each other but Troy benefited the most with that offensive line and Emmitt Smith. Not to mention he had #88 on the outside.
