Toomer: Romo better than Eli

How many SB MVP's did they win again?
Never use the exception for your argument rather then the rule. Kurt Warner was sacking grocery so that means we should stroll down to the nearest Kroger and work out all the sacker? The rule is if you are a qb that wins the Super Bowl MVP then you're probably more than a bus driver.

So it's about something as ridiculous as Super Bowl MVP now?

How elite was 'Super Bowl MVP' Larry Brown?

Eli did not have some remarkable performance worthy of MVP. It was simply a matter of having to give it to someone on the winning team.

As I recall they had a list on-screen during the broadcast since no player distinguished themselves.

That's just dumb.

I guess you are right.

After all, a single playoff win and great fantasy stats is enough for me.

Former Giants WR Amani Toomer is on Sirius, saying Tony Romo is a better quarterback than Eli Manning. Agree?
Eli was left out of the top 100 players a year ago. Last year he had a great year.

Every year is different. We'll see.

I think that I referenced qbs specifically.

This. In the absence of a single stellar performance by another player, one that obviously affects the game, the Super Bowl MVP is, by default, the QB. It fits in with the 'gets more credit, gets more blame' aspect of the position.

Eli has certainly ridden some hot streaks into the playoffs, after not particularly good performances earlier in the season.

Fine, you can attempt to make the topic as narrow as you'd like.

The point stands, his winning the MVP in this year's Super Bowl was a joke.

There was nothing MVP worthy about his performance.

He was simply the most well-known Giant and they had to give it to somebody.

And that shows how useless the Super Bowl MVP truly is and why it often has no value, no matter what position wins it.

Exactly.

And this is in no way an attempt to knock Eli Manning.

I very much doubted him early in his career but he has stepped up and erased my doubts.

I respect him for the player he has become and I'm not foolish enough to try to discount his winning two championships.

I'm also not foolish enough to consider them the end-all, be-all of quarterbacking.

I would take Tony because I'm a DC fan and I love my qb. Dallas hasn't been able to get everything together to get a good run in the playoffs and that was not all Romo's fault. Eli's TEAM comes up big for him when he screws up and Romo's doesn't. Romo is expected to play perfect ball because if he doesn't the team won't recover from it. Eli has had some help also with a great run game and some good defenses.

Would you say that Eli performs better in the regular season or the post season?

Are we going down a different road now and leaving any MVP talk behind?

Good.

I think Eli has come up big when the pressure has been highest.

That is to his credit.

But neither of his Super Bowl performances were stellar, and the team did not win either game because Eli carried them.

Again, I take nothing away from Eli Manning.

The man is a two-time Super Bowl champion.

But I think the case can easily be made that his championships clearly demonstrate the 'team game' concept.

First off, I don't like Eli Manning. Second, i'm a fan of Tony Romo. Third, as a life long Cowboys fan I hate anything Giants, Eagles, Cardinals, Commanders (yea, the old NFC East).

But.

Eli has done what Tony hasn't. Twice. And don't give me the ole he had a better team argument, because neither of those teams was picked to win the Super Bowl. Both had mediocre regular seasons.

In addition... it cracks me up how some of you LOVE NFL reports that have our guys described as better than others, and decry the STUPIDITY of reports that have other team's players as being better than ours.

How about just forming your own judgments?

For me, I'll take Tony over Eli every single day that Tony is a Cowboys player.

Just like, for me, Troy Aikman was the best QB of the 90's. Btw, I really think that was true anyway.

That's a relief, because for a minute there it looked like you made the amateurish mistake of confusing QB play with team play yet again. It's so embarrassing to watch our own fans fall for that sad head-fake every time someone trots it out.

You are right. I would also choose players like Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, and Doug Williams over the others like Warren Moon, Dan Marino, and Jim Kelly. I mean its obvious, Superbowl Rings tell all.

This is beyond lame.

First off, I don't know of anyone who argues greatness based upon ONE Super Bowl win. No one.

Second, none of the guys on your list won more than one, and there was a very good reason for that. They weren't great QB's.

in addition, the three guys you mentioned (Marino, Moon and Kelly) all had weaknesses that prevented them from winning the biggest game. The reason why no one is willing to see that is because their STATS are so impressive.

Kelly made huge mistakes (and in the two losses to the Cowboys some were unforced) that cost his team.

Same with Marino, same with Moon (ever see that big comeback by the Bills in the playoffs? Moon was horrible after the very hot start).

The fact is, you don't win multiple Super Bowls in the NFL at QB unless you are pretty good.

I think plenty of people do.

Steve Young finally got one when the 49'ers bought it. And that punched his ticket into the Hall of Fame.

And when it comes to Eli, one looks the same as the other. Both times the team got hot - the entire team - they made it into the playoffs and the team won it all. Second verse, same as the first.

So two (the same way) is the magic number?

*One, I think Steve Young is overrated. Always have. You could count on him to throw away games too. The one time he got rescued (1994), it took Bozo the clown as our coach, and an official swallowing his whistle on Deion mugging Irvin, or he wouldn't have gotten that one.

And when it comes to Eli, one looks the same as the other. Both times the team got hot - the entire team - they made it into the playoffs and the team won it all. Second verse, same as the first.

This (I say with due respect) is not an honest reading of his play. For sure in the first one. Eli played very well and deserved the MVP. He won the MVP both times I think.

So two (the same way) is the magic number?

I think two says you have played at a consistently high enough level that you allow your team to succeed. Again, away with the fantasy football view of football. Look with your own eyes! Do you see a guy who plays his best in the biggest moments, or a stat hound? In every single sport there are guys who put up big numbers that then wilt in the biggest moments. Every sport.

And Eli certainly is 'pretty good'.

I agree.

My thoughts exactly.:starspin

Eli Manning=Troy Aikman
Tony Romo=Steve Young (before the Super Bowl MVP)

That's not a slight to Tony because Steve Young was an excellent qb even before he won a sb. Hopefully he will get his breakthrough this year.

Eli is NOT Troy Aikman, not even in the same league.
