Toomer: Romo better than Eli

I boils down to the fact that Football is a team sport and Romo's team has repeatedly let him down (primarily the defense in recent seasons). With a better defense - particularly secondary - Dallas goes to the playoffs and who knows what happens.

In the first Giants game alone, Romo and the offense scored 34 points. Thirty-four really ought to be enough to win in the NFL, but because of the Cowboys shoddy pass defense, it wasn't. The Giants go down the field like the defense isn't even there and presto, Romo isn't clutch and Eli is. No matter that Romo drove his team to score and take the lead in the 4th quarter... because Eli did it last.

Same goes for the Patriots game. Romo leads a 4th quarter drive to (by all appearances) win the game in New England. But the Defense wilts once again at the end and allows a last second TD. Media says Romo isn't clutch but Brady is. Truth is, if the defense does it's job, everyone is talking about what a clutch game Romo had in beating the Pats at their place by driving the team down in the 4th quarter.

Romo puts the Cowboys in position to kick a game winner against Arizona but they miss the kick.

Then of course, Romo made some 4th quarter drives where the defense did do just enough and the Cowboys did win (49'ers, Commanders, Miami).

Everyone says Romo lost the Jets game, but the truth is that the blocked punt returned for a TD cost them the game just as much as anything. So did the fact that the Dallas defense couldn't cover a TE or RB out of the backfield that night if their lived had depended on it. Romo did throw a INT, but so did every other starting QB in the NFL. They happen, and if that determines if a QB is elite or not... then there are no elite QB's in the game.

In the Lions game, Tony had just recently had his ribs broken and his lung punctured (slightly). He had taken several injections in his side and if you look at his INT's that day, they all were because the ball was under thrown. He just couldn't quite get the velocity he normally does on the ball and when he threw like he typically does, it just didn't go as far as usual. I do blame him for not realizing he wasn't himself and not throwing into those tight windows... but without the broken ribs, those throws would have been a different story.

Oh well, the bottom line is that Tony is going to have to take the team and have some significant wins in the post season for everyone to stop saying things like he isn't a winner and isn't clutch. Finally, the team is putting the coaching and defense around him that might enable him to do just that... and finally shut everyone up who thinks it's Tony's fault the team isn't winning in the playoffs.

Toomer said that he was ready to declare Eli as superior to the Cowboys’ signal-caller, until looking at the numbers.

“I was all set — Romo’s no good, he’s a fourth-quarter choker — and then I started doing my job,” Toomer said. “I started looking at the numbers. I started looking at the statistics. I started looking at the quarterback rating. And I was shocked. I was shocked at how good Tony Romo’s statistics really were. This guy is really impressive.

“Then when I was on [SiriusXM NFL Radio's Movin' the Chains] and we were going over the NFC East, Tim Ryan, my co-host, said [Manning] is the best quarterback in the NFC East and the Giants were going to win the division. And I was like, wait a minute. All this information I had just gathered about Tony Romo, I couldn’t let him get away with it.

“So I said, ‘You know what? Tony Romo, statistically, he’s the better quarterback.’”

That's not a slight to Tony because Steve Young was an excellent qb even before he won a sb. Hopefully he will get his breakthrough this year.

This reminds me of the old Young vs Aikman debates only back then Cowboys fans where making the same arguments Giants fans are now :laugh1:

1) Who cares about when they played each other? Football is a team sport. Is Alex Smith better than Drew Brees because the 49ers beat the Saints in the playoffs?

2) Eli's played well in two playoff runs, no doubt. But it sure helps his chances when the Giants D absolutely dominates, like they did in both the 2008 and 2012 postseasons.

Tony Romo has NEVER had a D like that in the playoffs. The best D the Cowboys have had since he's been our QB was in the 2010 playoffs... but then Brett Favre scorched us in Minnesota to the tune of 4 TDs and a 134.4 QB rating.

Did Eli have to deal with that in 2008 or 2012? No... in 2008, the Giants D held arguably the best O of our era (Patriots) to just FOURTEEN points, so
the Giants won while scoring just seventeen points themselves.

Seventeen points? You're telling me Tony Romo couldn't have led his offense to seventeen points in that game? Actually, the Cowboys played the Patriots that same season (in the regular season). Romo led the offense to twenty points. Our D also scored 7 points on a defensive touchdown.

But our D also allowed 48 points by the Pats... not 14.

As usual the idiots at ESPN and the idiots in the NY media took this story and ran with it.. he said statistcally Romo was better.. he acknowledged Manning is the best clutch QB in the game. The media ran with this story and EVERYBODY took the bait..

One thing that I found amusing here living in NY was the way they thought Toomer was completely out of his mind.. Its like Eli is now Joe Montana.. Trust every one hated him half way thru his first superbowl season, now he is the best QB of all time and that Romo isnt even close to him.. I like Eli ALOT.. He is a terrific QB, he deserves all the credit he is getting.. Just please please back up the bus a bit...Look Giants fans are happy they have Eli and I am damn proud to have Romo as my QB... You can win with TOny, but the Cowboys have been broken for so long, its not the guys fault. Without Romo this team would win 5 games a year. He is the reason they are relevant every year...Thats why they have high expectations every year.. but its the easy and the lazy way to bash this guy and blame him for everything...They are clueless.. ALL of them are...Listen, he is NOT perfect, but neither is Eli...I have never in my life rooted for a player to win a championship more in my life than I have rooted for Romo..Its a shame, it truly is the crap he has to put up with... people forget, this dude wasn't even drafted by an NFL team.. Toomer just STUFFED Linda Cohen on ESPN radio. This thing is blowing up. He said that the more people criticize him for the comments the more and more he's doing his homework on Romo and he says it's not even close.

Then Cohen who admitted she was a lifelong Giants fan asked him about Romo's chance in the two games against the Giants last year and he shut her down again, saying that he was phenomenal the first game and got sacked six times in the second one and was running for his life and couldn't guard Victor Cruz from the bench.

He also got agitated at her for saying it was all Eli and all Tony. He said Plaxico won those games, Strahan won those game, I won those game together -- not Eli, just like Romo doesn't lose his.



But the best was after the interview when she said "Well, all I know is that MARCELLUS Bennett said last week he'd pick Eli because he looks for the open man."

That statement from top to bottom is so hilarious it speaks for itself and she couldn't get his name right saying it about five times wrong.

Finally, the ESPN narrative on Romo crumbles underneath scrutiny as they scurry about like rats from water.

Until Romo gets to the NFC Championship game, all the Phineas measuring contests on who is better are moot.

Stats in football are for the guy whose team lost.

Also, Eli has the better playoff passing numbers.

To be honest, it's the truth. The kid gets absolutely zero credit for his accomplishments. Even Strahan said he get no respects (shades of Rodney Dangerfield).

But the Giants never get any credit either, so be it.

Don't get carried away. I hate the Giants. I just know that Eli is a good Qb and saying that doesn't diminish how good a Qb Romo is.
