Tom Landry was a great coach. One of the best. Maybe he was a great speaker and motivator.

However, these 10 quotes leave a lot to be desired as far as quotes go. If anyone other than Landry said these same things, I doubt anyone would really care. I just don't see any greatness or particular wisdom in any of these quotes. Nothing that really stands out as memorable to me from these 10 quotes. Lombardi and Wooden and others were much better at it. I'm not knocking Landry. I just don't want to heap praise on what I see are mediocre quotes.

Tom Landry Quotes #4

"A team that has character doesn't need stimulation."

That would be my favorite.

The OP didn't list my personal favorite quote by Coach Landry:

"Leadership is getting someone to do what they don't want to do, to achieve what they want to achieve".

That is a mantra that I use to lead Soldiers, and it's been extremely effective!

Thanks, Coach!

Landry was not a rah rah type guy, but many of his assistant coaches were. Ernie Stautner had a very different demeanor from Landry. That makes for a good mixture of leadership for the players.

They were in your face type guys like Reeves and Ditka but they were not the head coach. Tom was head dog.

No doubt they had different demeanors most people are different from each other but one thing for sure you can't put on an act and try to be something your not.

Great thread. These quotes give you a good idea of how much Landry understood. A whole lot, it seems.

History of Professional Football (1920-present)
Consecutive seasons with both offense and defense ranked in the Top 10 in both scoring and total yards (adjusted for league size).

11 Landry, Cowboys (NFL, 1968-78)
4 Belichick, Patriots (NFL, 2006-09)
3 Brown, Browns (AAFC, 1946-48)
3 Grant, Vikings (NFL, 1974-76)
3 Halas, Bears (NFL, 1926-28)
3 Holmgren, Packers (NFL, 1996-98)
3 Noll, Steelers (NFL, 1974-76)
3 Seifert, 49ers (NFL, 1989-91 and 1994-96)
3 Shanahan, Broncos (NFL, 1996-98)
3 Shula, Dolphins (NFL, 1971-73)
3 Walsh, 49ers (NFL, 1986-88)

Good quotes! I've heard similar but none that were directly related to Landry.

This is one of my favorites too. I forgot it came from him.

The funny thing is, I remember people constantly griping during Landry's tenure about how he didn't show enough emotion--didn't get all in the faces of the players or refs. Everyone just knew that you had to be animated and yelling all the time. Yet Landry was one of the most successful coaches of all time, and he was nearly always calm and unflappable. Behind the scenes he had a way of quietly making men fear him, just because of the way he would point out their mistakes in front of everyone. There are many ways to motivate and prepare a team, and as has been stated, you have to do what comes naturally to you. The minute you try to fake it, you're lost.

I remember that. People resented Landry and the Cowboys' success and had to @#$% about something so they made a big deal out of his being cool on the sidelines. He had a lot of haters. Today the fans of other teams generally show him respect today like they do with Lombardi, but back then many didn't.

One of my favorite quotes from Tom comes from 1983 or 84 that my dad had heard on the radio....he told us at dinner that night.

"If we had 11 players on the field who played as hard as Bill Bates does and did their homework like he does, we'd be almost impossible to beat".

Yeah, it's pretty obvious preparation is important to JG. It bums me out that the idea of getting smart players and preparing them has become a notion to ridicule here, because it's maybe what I like best about our current direction, and I believe, strongly, it's how you build a team capable of winning consistently. We just need the postseason results.

Maybe im crazy but I think preparation is Garretts biggest weakness. We often start out games looking flat and outcoached, only to fix our woes and play better in the second half. Meaning Garrett does a poor job having them ready but a nice job adjusting. We hardly ever have success early on, especially on opening drives, which are always your scripted plays. We more often than not look really poor on opening drives. To me that shows poor preparation. I do give him credit for adjusting later on though.
