So here are my five best players so far this season:
1. Zack Martin - He is at the top of my list. A rock, A leader, the most dependable, consistent player on the team.....for years. This offense doesn't go without him. He has been so vital for so long that he is now taken for granted. Well, I want you to imagine what this offense would be like if Connor McGovern was the best Cowboy's guard. That's what teams without a perennial; 1st team All-Pro/Pro Bowler at guard look like.
2. Micah Parsons - He is the Reason. This defense evolved into one of the NFL's best the day Micah was drafted. Since the first day he stepped onto the field no other NFL team has scored as many defensive TD's than the Cowboys. All the great plays on defense happen because of Micah whether he was involved or not. If another player gets a sack it's because the QB was trying to get away from Micah or because the opponent offense dedicated so many resources to stopping Micah, it created opportunity for his teammates. The majority of INT's can be traced from a QB reacting to the pressure created by the defense and we all know who leads that pressure.
3. Donovan Woods - There were some suggestions during the preseason that the Cowboys had actual trade capital due to a talented but crowded safety squad. The name most mentioned when discussing a trade was Donovan Wilson. Some reasoned that the starters Kearse and Hooker would limit Wilson's participation while being satisfied with the depth created by Mukuamu and Bell. It turns out that, not only is Wilson spending time on the field, he is one of the defense's most productive players. Donovan is near the top of every Cowboys defensive stat which includes solo tackles, combined tackles, QB pressures, sacks, and tackles for a loss. This "third" safety is ranked #11 in the NFL in both combined tackles and solo tackles.
4. Tony Pollard - This is not a slight of Zeke. In fact, there are things that Zeke can do that Pollard will never be able to do. In addition, Pollard does get the advantage of running the ball usually after Zeke has slammed into them a few times. We've all played the game at some level whether it was college or "tackle football": on an empty field with a dozen neighborhood kids. There are some guys you just don't want to tackle and when you have to, you feel it.
With that said Tony Pollard is one of the best performers so far because he has maximized the opportunities given him. He understands his role and gives every pound of effort available. The best thing about Tony is that when he is asked to go beyond expectations, he exceeds expectations. He's going to get a great contract with someone next season, perhaps the Cowboys, perhaps not. In any case, I hope he is used in the way he can be the most productive for the longest time. There have been many suggestions that he be used in a way that might produce short term success but wear him down at the end of games....and seasons.
5. Trevon Diggs - Did you knows that Diggs competed in the "Best Reception" competition prior to the Pro Bowl last season? He was the only DB, the rest were Pro Bowl receivers. Diggs won. Some day, they are just going to stop throwing in his direction. Until then, he is a true spark to this team and can change the complexion of a game in an instance.
