You are right about Tavaris Jackson, wrong about Hasselback as this and last season are dead on proof after seeing Seattle's running game decline since 2 years ago as well Hasselback's. What I am saying is that Brees plays much more effectively when NO is productive running the ball and that he isn't as effective when they aren't running so productively. Also that Carson Palmer would be even more effective if he had a running game, and not that no QB will be successful without a running game. Manning and Brady are perfect examples yes and so is Romo. Last year we got to run by opening up defenses with the pass and Romo was very effective before a running game was established.
The truth is, when Reggie Bush and McAllister are effective Brees has phenominal games and vice versa when the running game isn't going. His arm is not condusive to the deep ball and he isnot capable of making all NFL throws and therefore can be game planned for easier and has to rely more on a productive running game and outlet passes to the flats to compensate for lack of passing deep into the secondary. Marques Colston is not a very fast WR at all and he doesn't need to be in NO's system because they aren't going deep much at all because of Brees' arm. Same thing when he was in SD, LT and Gates. Payton knows this, the league knows this, Brees is gonna be good within 20 yards, beyond that it's not his cup of tea. Nonetheless he's a very effective QB in systems that have possession WR's and consistent running games. Give Palmer a running game and he is much more harder to game plan for than Brees. No excuses,Palmer doesn't need them, is stats are not as bad as you are making them out to be. In fact, last year they were comparable to Brees'.
Here's the Stat on both last year. Keep in mind that Carson Palmer was playing behind virtually every game last year.
Carson Palmer: Completion % = 64.9, Yards = 4,131, TD/INT = 26/20, Attempts = 575
Drew Brees: Completion % = 67.5, Yards = 4,423, TD/INT = 28/18, Attempts = 652
So are the stats comparable? Palmer playing with no running game to eleviate some pressure? Coming off an injury? Believe me, having a running game to keep things close and give a QB a chance to get his team ahead in the 4th qtr is huge for a QB. Playing behind all the timewith no running game will kill any good QB. Palmer is still putting numbers up like Brees though. Brees is in mytop 6, not top 5 and if McNabb was healthy he'd be knocking Big Ben or Palmer out.
