I don't think Emmitt belongs...Too much trash talk. "Dimond among trash" comments..as troy as well.

One of the worst things I've read in the history of this forum. The all time leading rusher, and the key in the dynasty of the 90s absolutely belongs. What kind of silliness is this.

You deserve at least a hundred eye rolls for that comment. Without Emmitt and Troy there wouldn't have been any championships in the 90's not a single one! All their negative comments about the team have been the truth.

The 2 top Cowboy players are Staubach and Emmitt doubt the Cowboys would have even one championship had it not been for them. Staubach was the Cowboys most important player of the 70's and Emmitt was their most important player of the 90's.

1. Dodger
2. Emmitt
3. Lilly

It's hard to say no to the all time rushing leader and, if I'm not mistaken, the only non-QB to have both the NFL MVP and superbowl MVP in the same year.

Thanks man....I appreciate it but the Op probably meant the top Cowboys on the football field. But I still appreciate the vote of confidence.

Oh, I'm sorry; I forgot which alternate universe I'm posting in. Man, I feel sorry for you guys: you haven't lived until you've seen Shante Carver and Kavika Pittman just take over games, collapsing the pocket and meeting at the quarterback again and again and again.

Man that list is hard to beat - all phenomenal choices - I might have to go with Bill Musgrave over Rod Hill though - just too much body of work to ignore.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Ah. You know the long grueling offseason has arrived when these threads start.

Not that there is anything wrong with them, but it certainly feels a little early.

1. Staubach - Any all-time list begins here; the face of the Cowboys in the 70s; took Cowboys to four SBs in eight years as a full-time, healthy starter; greatest QB of his era; arguably in the top 5 all-time.

2. Lilly - Mr. Cowboy; played in the golden age of defensive linemen and defensive front fours, and the case can be made he was the best of a group that included legendary players like Alan Page, Merlin Olsen, Deacon Jones and Mean Joe Greene; a truly transcendent player that just refused to be blocked.

3. Emmitt - This one is difficult. I think it boils down to four players: Randy White, Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikman and Larry Allen. White was a truly great player who was nearly on par with Lilly; watching White play was a privilege. Allen and John Hannah were arguably the two greatest guards in NFL history; LA was the greatest Cowboys O-lineman ever (although a healthy Erik Williams over 10-12 years might have challenged that honor). Aikman's leadership and will to win were similar to Staubach's; his play during the Cowboys 92-95 playoff run was brilliant overall. But I think I have to give no. 3 to Emmitt, narrowly over Aikman. Emmitt was a complete back, courageous and the heart and soul, along with Irvin, of the 90s dynasty. And there was the little matter of being the NFL career rushing leader. ;)

Three posts already that don't include Staubach -- easily one of the 5 best QB in the history of the game.

I'm with you, Percy. I know I'm old school, but any all-time DC list that does not include Staubach fails to take into account the true history of the franchise and fails to realize just how special Staubach was. His stats are rather pedestrian compared to the numbers being put up in today's pass happy NFL but stats do not begin to tell the whole story.

It's hard for me to speak on behalf of the older generation of Cowboys fans... Heck, even the triplets were a little before my time. I was 8 the last time they won a Super Bowl.

For just what I've seen from a fans perspective (2000 until now) I'd have to say the top 3 are:

1. Jason Witten
2. DeMarcus Ware
3. Terrell Owens

Honorable mention goes to: Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, Tyron Smith, Roy Williams (for a little while) Dat Nguyen, Sean Lee (when healthy), Dexter Coakley, La'Roi Glover, and Terrance Newman.

Darren Woodson, Emmitt Smith and Larry Allen (were towards the end of their careers) also deserve mentions although if taking their whole body of work into consideration, they'd rank much higher.

If you're talking just players, Lilly, Staubach and Emmitt. Good list to choose from.

There's a difference between being young and being ignorant.

In 2013, somebody took every QB who ever played, and compared his passer rating to the average of his era.

1. Staubach 83.4 (62.8) +32.8%
2. Young 96.8 (74.1) +30.6%
3. Rodgers 104.9 (81.1) +29.3%
4. Montana 92.3 (72.6) +27.1%
5. Tarkenton 80.4 (64.3) +25.0%

For those who don't already know, one of the very best to ever play the quarterback position wore the star.

Can't believe all the E Smith love.
Yes easy top ten pick, top three. Not in my book.
