Trade Bait

Whats your deal?

It was confirmed. I'm on my phone otherwise I would look it up for you.

I understand you are busy, but who confirmed it? Which members of Dallas and Cinci confirmed it? I will be right here.

At one point Jason Witten was a #2 TE on this roster.

I'd not take a Bengals late 1st for Bennett. Not with his play in training camp. Yea, he's got to have that translate but the last guy who tore up camp then disappeared in real games was Miles Austin.

If guys are making outstanding plays versus NFL competition you have to keep them. Phillips is solid but he's also been wide open on his catches because no one covered him. He can not go out wide and do the things Jason or MartyB do athletically.

I was dismayed when we drafted the guy in r2 but truth is he is a heck of an athlete that should continue to develop. He is already a plus blocker and a match up problem as a receiver.

Sure you might end up with another Mike Jenkins in two years but chances are much higher you end up with another Bobby Carpenter. We have enough picks next draft to go up and get a guy we covet, no need to sacrifice young immense talent to do so.

Jerry Jones confirmed it on the radio in his mealy mouthed way. Sad it was a chance to get a first, mumbled a lot and said they wanted MartyB.

Not sure the trade would have been just a 1 for MartyB though. Could have been Marty plus later picks for the R1. It was pseudo confirmed but never truly clarified AFAIK.

Sounds like it was a 2nd rounder for Marty B

Jerry Jones would not confirm that the Bengals had indeed made a trade offer for Martellus Bennett earlier this week, but he sure didn't say it was BS either...

Jerry on The Fan this morning
'Top round or two of the draft'. That means it was a 2nd rounder if you are asking me. No way the Bengals offered up a first rounder for Bennett.
Would I have done the deal? No. If it was a first rounder then yeah.
Sounds like the Cowboys would not have taken the Bengals first rounder either IF two things. One had it been offered, and two had it been thought that the Bengals would be sitting somewhere from like 20-32 in the 2010 draft.

Got that from Matt Mosley on Galloway and Company yesterday...

Mosley talks Bennett trade offer

If Jerry turned down a first rounder then he's nuts. If you get that first rounder from the Bengals then the Cowboys could have combined that with their own first round pick and traded up until the top of the first 15 picks to grab a franchise Left Tackle in April.

And trust me. The future Left Tackle is much more important than whatever Bennett is bringing to the table now and maybe over the next few seasons.
I like Bennett's potential, but that's all it is until his numbers increase on the field. And don't tell me how great he's doing in run blocking right now. The Cowboys didn't draft him to be a good blocker, but they did draft John Phillips to be one.

Do you really feel that Bennett is so much better as a run blocker than Phillips that you would pass up on getting a future franchise Left Tackle?

The "significant offer" the Cowboys turned down at the trade deadline was for young tight end Martellus Bennett, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.
The Bengals, who lost Ben Utecht (concussion) and Reggie Kelly (Achilles) in the preseason and have been frustrated by rookie Chase Coffman, are the ones that made the offer. After creating major hype with a big camp, Bennett has been a bust in the passing game this season. He has just four catches for 40 yards

A good team trades aging players with a few good years left. A bad team trades young players.

Seriously folks. We have a good young player who needs a little time to develop. It is just plain stupid to sit around drooling over getting a pick. With that pick, you'd very likely get (if you were lucky) a good young player who needs a little time to develop.

Bird in the freaking hand folks.

Knock Jerrah all you want.

Threads like this prove he knows what he's doing far more than the vast majority here would.

Again, has anyone noticed he was gone?

You win games by throwing the ball. It will be tougher to do as the OL deteriorates.

Their first is going to suck anyway. The coaches must know something we don't. He has the potential to be awesome IMO.

At some point it gets irritating to continue reading about potential. He has not improved his play from year 1 to year 2 which can be a sign for concern. I hope he focuses better this offseason and refines his understainding of the offense, his route running and his hands.

I do really like the two TE set and it will be more effective with a second downfield threat in Bennett than Phillips but Bennett needs to put in the work.

This.....

Phillips > MartyBS

You guys realize that Cinci won thier division, right???

So we would trade a young TE that we drafted in the 2nd round for a late 1st???

Seems dumb, very dumb. And as far as using Cinci's 1st and our 1st to trade up into the top 15 for a LT, that would be dumb as well.

It is very possible that Free can transition very well into a good LT for us. Free has played very well at RT and his strenghts are pass protection, quick feet, and good agility....all needed to be a good LT.

This may deserve a thread of it's own but I've been content by Doug Frees' play but do you folks think he could make a transition to LT and be Adam's eventual replacement?

I think the team may be planning on it. Jerry could not contain himself talking about how great Free has played and how great it was for the future. I am thinking Free replaces Flozel either next year of defiently the year after.

Free would actually be better at LT I think. Free's main weakness is his lack of strenght. At RT, most of the guys you face are power rushers while most of the guys you face at LT are speed rushers. So Free might actually be a better LT than RT if you look at his strenghts and weaknesses.

This trade is going to end up like the Bryant for Larry Johnson trade....never confirmed but talked about forever like it was true.

Please take a 2nd for him Jerry. Pleaseeee!

Mardy Gilyard>Martellus Bennett

I'm pretty sure Gillyard is staying in Cincy for one more year based on his comments when Brian Kelly jumped ship.

I dont remember anyone confirming it as fact either. I think Laufenberg through it out there but I dont recall anyone on the Cowboys or Bengals ever commenting on it.

When Jones was talking about the deal, he didnt name Bennett but said we could have got a starting calibar player in return. I dont recall him ever mentioning it was a 1st rd pick.
